If there anything Texans are known for it’s big hair, and that will come to a head during this summer’s Zilker Musical Hairspray. The annual tradition will be returning this July to give Austin something to sing about every Thursday through Sunday. As always, the Zilker Summer Musical is free and open to the public.
This year, The Still Water Foundation, has made a donation to Zilker Theatre Productions and gifts donated by individuals will be matched. For 57 years, Zilker has been hosting the summer musical for audiences. Excitingly, this makes it the longest running free outdoor musical in the country, and it still brings audiences out in hordes throughout the summer. Despite this year’s rains, the Zilker musical will unite the city’s musical lovers with this classic favorite.
While based on the 1988 film, the musical takes place in a colorful and spunky Baltimore in 1962. Tracy Turnblad sets out to perform on the The Corny Collins Show and finds herself swept up in a battle for equality. The more recent film in 2007 brought in even more fans, so the event will almost certainly fill up.
Attendees should plan to arrive early with blanket or lawn chairs (depending on where they prefer to sit). Now that the weather has finally agreed to cooperate, Texans will be able to sit back and enjoy an Austin tradition and once again experience quality performances in one of our most iconic parks.
