There are a couple of mantras that can be heard shouted from Mt. Bonnell. Besides being the “Live Music Capital of the World,” Austinites like to “keep it weird.” This idea of embracing who we are and not being afraid of being different or weird is celebrated year ‘round. One event that truly exudes both mantras is the Keep Austin Weird Festival + 5K. On Saturday, June 27th, Austinites will celebrate 13 years of Keepin’ it Weird.
Costume are encourage during this annual festival, and the weirder the better because there is a costume contest. Throughout the festival, live music will echo from the Long Center all-day long. Along with the live music, there will be Austin vendors, crafts and food trucks that truly celebrate our amazing city.
The 5K is not to be missed. What has been called the world’s slowest 5K, local businesses will have fun stops throughout the course. From the Deep Eddy’s Vodka Shot Stop to the Clif Bars’ slip and slidee, those are just two of the more than 12 stops along the course.
This year’s music lineup includes: Tameca Jones, Guy Forsyth, Roxy Roca, Band of Heathens and Holiday Mountain.
While the fest celebrates all things weird, it is also benefitting a good cause. Not only will a portion of each Fest pass go to the Capital Area Food Bank, funds raised at the celebrity dunking booth will also go to the food bank. And this year they are putting a “weird Texas spin” on it. (Hint: It might involve some famous BBQ sauce.)
