November has a new look – and a new name. The global movement known as “Movember” is an entire month set aside to change the face of men’s health, one mustache at a time. Participants register with The Movember Foundation and commit to shaving their facial hair on November 1st, and allowing a mustache to grow for the remainder of the month. This works to spread awareness of the foundation’s goal, and to unite those who are involved with Movember.
The men and women who participate in Movember are called “Mo Bros” and “Mo Sistas.” They are all committed to raising money for research and inciting awareness of the issues associated with men’s health. Some concerns off of which they operate include: men’s shorter average lifespan, the prevalence of cancer in men, and men’s low frequency of physicals to communicate with their doctors and to check up on potential health problems.
The funds raised from Movember will support the foundation’s various, ongoing programs, such as the Men’s Health program, the Prostate Cancer and Testicular Cancer programs, and the Global Collaboration sect. They also intend to instigate conversations about men’s health throughout the month to improve the general understanding of the health risks men face. They hope that this will lead to men being more proactive, and to take preventative measures to stay healthy.
In Boston, the annual Stache Dash will be held on November 22, with registration beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Tequila Rain. The 21+ event will be part scavenger hunt, part bar crawl. With the purchase of a ticket, each participant will also receive a tee-shirt, a complimentary mustache, and a Mustache Dash challenge list. The cover charges will be waived at each bar, and there will be food and beverage specials for all participants. It’ll be the best (and the hairiest) event of the season!
