Last week, I attended “Tailored on the Town“; an event to benefit Tailored for Education. The event, held at the Lenox Hotel in Boston’s Back Bay recruited some of the city’s most influential Bostonians including Author Jonathan Soroff, Event Chair Kristen Daly, Tonya Mezrich, Designer Michael De Paulo and Boston Marathon Hero Carlos Arredondo .
Founded in 2011 by Jessica Roy and Megan Kelly, Tailored for Education strives to increase school enrollment in impoverished areas by providing children with school uniforms. For millions of children around the globe, education represents the only way out of a life of poverty.
While most schools charge a tuition fee or are privately funded, they still require students to wear a uniform. The average cost of a uniform at the schools we work with is $27. This out of pocket cost is often a financial burden for the family and forces many to forego school, or worse, send the children to work.
Providing these children with uniforms gives them the opportunity to receive an education and improve their standard of living. With the donations we receive we provide students with locally made uniforms and an opportunity to create a better life for themselves and their families.
Highlight of the evening for all was when the audience was surprised with a video from the children who recently received their uniforms. The looks on their faces and the appreciation in their voices was inspiring.
