Today, there are 26 million Americans living with diabetes and 79 million Americans who are pre-diabetic. Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of disease in the country, and it comes in two forms: Type 1 diabetes, which is typically found in children and young adults, and Type 2 diabetes, which is usually found in older individuals.
This 3-mile walk begins at the Bandshell in Golden Gate Park and takes participants through the glorious sights of one of San Francisco’s most beloved locations. The event will include music, local entertainment, family friendly activities and of course the opportunity to interact with “Red Striders”, walkers currently living with diabetes (you can spot them by their honorary red caps) as well as other individuals who are generally passionate about the fight against diabetes.
The walk, which has been taking place for more than 20 years, will fundraise for the Association’s research, education and advocacy programs. Over the past years the event has succeeded in raising more than $175,000,000 and has greatly contributed to improving the lives of those living with diabetes.
