The atmosphere was reflective of a dream as guests gathered into the Lincoln Center Salon for the LIE SANGBONG Spring and Summer 2015 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week presentation. The runway was in itself pure artistry–constructed entirely
out of 1,188 picturesque glass tiles featuring photos and motifs from the LIE SANGBONG archives, it was one of the many sights and details that designer Lie Sang Bong (“Mr. Lie”) along with Korean sculptor and installation artist, Jang Seung Hyo, crafted especially for attendees. From butterflies to clouds and floral petals, the scene was set perfectly to compliment the designer’s Spring and Summer 2015 Collection, entitled “Dream Road.”
The collection was an overall celebration of life and purposefully blissful in its presence to incite positivity and optimism. Mr. Lie’s native South Korea was affected by a maritime disaster this past April, so the collection was a tribute of sorts and a beacon of hope. “It is from hardship that we derive strength and hope,” Mr. Lie comments. “With this collection, I want to share the positivity that is brought on by the beginning of spring and the promise of the new day.” Euphoric and even ethereal at times, the collection and the precision by which the LIE SANGBONG collection was created definitely adhered to the achievement of its overall desired effect.
This would not be the first time that Mr. Lie designed on the account of charity or was inspired by a specified cause. In 2008, the designer dressed a Minnie Mouse doll for a charity auction to mark the 80th anniversary of the iconic Mickey Mouse. The designer has also housed many of his own charity functions such as his “Green is Love” event in 2011 as well as participating in numerous charitable fetes in his native South Korea.
Spotted in the crowd for the LIE SANGBONG fashion show and effortlessly wearing the top-tiered designer was actress Katherine McNamara, Fe Saracino Fendi, Ellie Eckert and Hofit Golan. As the show was underway, silence mesmerized the room. The collection embodied feminism to perfection and captured the “Dream Road” theme eloquently. Muted palates of white, turquoise, purple and cobalt blue ruled the runway as the reoccurring trends of pleated skirts, belted over sized jackets and delicate materials of silk and chiffon cascaded into a perfect silhouette. As with the prior designer presentations, the theme of the Spring and Summer 2015 collection was to remain airy and light– all the while allowing for effortless body movement. The ‘X-shaped’ jackets and dresses were signature to the presentation and synonymous with the overarching butterfly winged theme.
Overall, the LIE SANGBONG presentation provided one of the more visually stimulating fashion shows for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. As the designer prepares for the opening of his first U.S. boutique in New York City, all will eagerly await the release of the Spring and Summer 2015 collection to hit stores across the globe beginning in March 2015.
