Miss A Columnist

Kelly Fay is the Nashville Editor for Miss A. She is a firm believer that life wouldn’t be as enjoyable without a steaming fresh cup of coffee early in the morning, sipped from a beautifully detailed-painted mug. She values the small but beautiful things in life. She adores travel, even if it is to the local coffee shop; She lives for laughter with a friend, even if it is at my expense; and she loves a challenge, even if she doesn't come out a winner. She grew up and lived in beautiful sunny California where her love for the outdoors was sparked at an early age. Following her desire to be surrounded by beauty, she relocated to Humboldt County to attend Humboldt State University on a basketball scholarship. She received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Humboldt State in Kinesiology with an emphasis in teaching/coaching. Led by her inner-gypsy, upon graduation she traveled and lived in many different places. She called the Alaskan darkness home during the winter of ‘08, experienced” tea time” and” the tube” while living in London, and resided in the sandy dunes of Newport Beach, California for nearly two years. She moved to Nashville to experience the simplicity of the South while still engaging in city life. She spends her weekdays teaching preschool and personal training while she spends her weekends being active, exploring new places and eating good foods. She is an adventurous and spontaneous girl who enjoys a good time but also wants to make a difference in this crazy world!

2014 Labor Day Weekend Music Festivals That Give Back

Labor Day weekend is among us which means so are the festivals; and what better way to celebrate the end of summer than with a music festival full of days of sun, sing-a-longs, tailgating and philanthropy. Here are the top 2014 concert destinations for those of you with itchy Labor Day feet.

Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam

Country music is beachin’ this Labor Day weekend as the 2014 Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam gears up to take over Panama City Beach, Florida. The three day event offers an All-Star lineup including Carrie Underwood, Dierks Bentley and Blake Shelton as the headliners; but don’t worry, the performances leading up to the MVP’s will keep you energized all day long. Artists such as Big and Rich, Jon Pardi, Love and Theft, Randy Houser, Lonestar, John Michael Montgomery, Cassadee Pope and Neal McCoy will be rocking with sand between their toes as they perform for the thousands of concert goers.

The efforts of the crew putting on the event are not just geared towards entertainment, the Gulf Coast Jam is oozing philanthropic efforts as well. Last year the concert raised upward of $20,000 to organizations such as Habitat For Humanity, Naval Support Activity Panama City, Miracle Strip Junior Women’s Club, and Arnold High School, and this year similar efforts are being made. In addition to providing the community with over 1,000 jobs during the weekend festivities, contributions are made to local charities who in turn provide workers in exchange for the support. Lastly, the festival is working with Guy Harvey to educate country music fans on the Gulf of Mexico by providing a unique and informative exhibit, Guy Harvey’s Conservation Village. If you are a country music fan looking for fun in the sun, a boot-stomping good time AND a charitable giveback, y’all need to get your tickets now!

Bumbershoot

It’s no coincidence that the annual Bumbershoot celebration is permanently carved into Seattle’s Labor Day schedule as the Emerald City doesn’t shine quite as brightly year-round as it does during the month of August. In its fourth decade, Bumbershoot has not only gifted the Seattle city limits with a lineup of urban tunes from both up-and-comers and musical veterans, but the festival has made consistent efforts in maintaining their beautiful color: green.

The annual celebration ranks high in the environmentally-friendly festival community providing an array of options to go green as you jam out this Labor Day weekend. Recycle, recycle and, go ahead, recycle some more! The festival grounds are tatted with recycling stations urging attendees to dump trash consciously. It’s evident Bumbershoot takes recycling seriously as it’s estimated that 7.5 tons of waste is recycled each year. Additionally, all vendors provide 100 percent compostable plates and utensils, all merchandise sold on the grounds comes from the locally sustainable company Five Bamboo, and finally the entire festival is lit up by renewable and 100 percent hydroelectric energy source, Seattle City Light. If you’re looking for a new color, green is the new black but just remember, you heard it here first!

The Budweiser Made in America Festival

What on earth could be better than ONE amazingly patriotic festival? TWO, of course! Jay Z is once again standing behind the annual Budweiser Made in America Festival series rocking this Labor Day in two venues separated by most of the United State of America. Los Angeles and Philadelphia will be hosting the festival that will feature an out-of-this-world lineup, including Kings of Leon, Pharrell Williams, and Kanye West jet setting from Philly to Los Angeles to headline both events. The event will provide music lovers with non-stop musical acts varying in genres but not in energy as the vibes will be grovin’ and bodies will be movin’ throughout the weekend performances.

The bi-coast happening serves to benefit United Way, an organization whose mission is to” improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good.” United Way has initiated a 10-year program aimed to improve education by cutting the number of high school dropouts, achieving financial stability and promoting healthy lifestyles. Pick your city and jump on the bandwagon for a good ole’ American time!
