It was a thrilling day at the 84th Radnor Hunt Races! For my first time attending the event, I was at Team I Hate Cancer’s tailgate, hosted by CJ and Michael Walsh. The tailgate raised funds to benefit the LIVESTRONG Foundation for the Team LIVESTRONG Philly Challenge. For every $500 raised, a child of parents with cancer will be sent to a week-long overnight experience at Camp Kesem which is operated by University of Pennsylvania students. The LIVESTRONG Foundation was founded in 1997 by Lance Armstrong to improve the lives of all those affected by cancer by providing emotional, financial, and practical support for cancer patients and their loved ones. Proceeds from the Radnor Hunt also benefit the Brandywine Conservancy, an organization which works to conserve the natural and cultural resources of the Brandywine River watershed and other selected areas.
$200,000 in prize money was awarded for the 6 steeplechases. This year’s winners included:
The Milfern Cup
Selection Sunday (Sam Jones, Rider)
The Thompson Memorial Steeplechase
GMAC (Harry Haynes, Rider)
The Radnor Hunt Cup
Moonsox (K. Fritz Boniface, Rider)
National Hunt Cup
Decoy Daddy (Carol-Ann Sloan, Rider)
The James M. Moran, Jr. Steeplechase
Happy Digger (Harry Haynes, Rider)
The Henry Collins Steeplechase
Complete Dyno (Richard Boucher, Rider)
Besides watching the races, it was fun to stroll along the grounds and see the creative tailgate parties, classic cars on display, preppy outfits and of course, the hats. It always comes down to the hats. It was certainly an exciting day at the races.
