Miss A Columnist

Mollie Gabriel is the Charleston Editor for Miss A. She has always admired people who can focus on one thing. Raised in San Diego, she eagerly left for the University of Missouri's School of Journalism, on a whim transferred to Smith College in Massachusetts and graduated with a degree in Cultural Anthropology--but not before being introduced to Geography, which led to a certificate of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from the University of Denver. In June she quit her job as a GIS Analyst in San Diego for her Navy Submariner's military orders to Charleston, and left for a road trip across America to see as many national parks, monuments and baseball games they could reach. Starting a blog about their adventures, she remembered how much she loved writing, and how much she missed exploring, interviewing and story telling. A big proponent of healthy and active lifestyles, Mollie can be found pounding pavement miles away from home training for a marathon, building mind and body strength in the yoga studio, or blending the produce section in her Vitamix. She instantly loved the class and sass of Charleston southerners and is completely addicted to shrimp and grits.

April is annually known as Autism Awareness month—a designated time for supporters to come together for 5k fundraisers, art showings and galas to raise money, educate the public and increase the national dialogue of autism in our society. Although officially held on Saturday, May 3 this year, the Walk for Autism-Charleston will be celebrating Autism Awareness month with a fun-filled morning event at the historic Hampton Park from 7:00 a.m. to noon.

The day will feature activities for the whole family with free refreshments, jump castles, live music, therapy dogs and haircuts by Great Clips. There will also be a silent auction and autism merchandise. Registration for the walk begins at 9:00 a.m. and the walk will start at 10:00 a.m.

Walk for Autism-Charleston is a nonprofit organization that raises money to help families affected by autism.
