“Never forget that what becomes timeless was once truly new, he tells Vanity Fair’s April issue. “What I find most interesting in fashion is that it has to reflect our time… People used to define me as a futurist designer, but, you know, the future is now for me.” A rebirth happened in Paris last week. And it’s initials are L.V. The Fall Winter 2014 collection of Louis Vuitton represented more than a new season of high fashion. It was the debut of newly acquired artistic director, Nicolas Ghesquiere, the previous mainstay at Balenciaga for fifteen years. ‘My parents were not happy,’ he tells [Ingrid] Sischy, saying they wanted him to go the conventional route and get a degree from fashion school,” Vanity Fair‘s feature reads. The story cites the time after Ghesquière was hired at Jean Paul Gaultier when he was only 18 years old, before he set off to freelance at some of Paris’ other prestigious design houses. Four years later, he appeared at Balenciaga, and, well, the rest is history .
Off to a confident start, the collection is simple and intriguing, leaving you with welcomed anticipation as to where the designer will go next. The collection is modern (accent on the ‘mod’) with a private jet-set, sixties/seventies ‘Jane Bond’ feel- words that somewhat humbly paint the picture. Crisp leather tailoring, mid-thigh lengths, clean neutrals, and, of course, the perfect handbags create looks that everyone one of our body types can be happy with. The ultimate personal touch are the notes he left on each guests’s seat: “Words cannot express exactly how I am feeling at this moment,” wrote Ghesquière. “Above all, immense joy at being here, in the knowledge that my stylistic expression is at one with the Louis Vuitton philosophy.” Welcome to the new LV.
