Miss A Columnist

Mollie Gabriel is the Charleston Editor for Miss A. She has always admired people who can focus on one thing. Raised in San Diego, she eagerly left for the University of Missouri's School of Journalism, on a whim transferred to Smith College in Massachusetts and graduated with a degree in Cultural Anthropology--but not before being introduced to Geography, which led to a certificate of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from the University of Denver. In June she quit her job as a GIS Analyst in San Diego for her Navy Submariner's military orders to Charleston, and left for a road trip across America to see as many national parks, monuments and baseball games they could reach. Starting a blog about their adventures, she remembered how much she loved writing, and how much she missed exploring, interviewing and story telling. A big proponent of healthy and active lifestyles, Mollie can be found pounding pavement miles away from home training for a marathon, building mind and body strength in the yoga studio, or blending the produce section in her Vitamix. She instantly loved the class and sass of Charleston southerners and is completely addicted to shrimp and grits.

The event raises money to support the boys of Windwood Farm Home for Children. Windwood Family Services has focused on creating a safe haven for abused or neglected children in the lowcountry. In 1985, the organization began by housing six children at the old family home of local businessman Joseph L. Tamsberg, Jr., and over the past 28 years has grown to become a significant resource for at risk children in the community.  In 2010, Windwood opened a new residential treatment program and in 2011 the non-profit was awarded a state contract for providing rehabilitative behavioral health services. That same year, they opened an out-patient counseling center in Mount Pleasant. The organization continues to grow, with expectations of reaching 800 or more families per year.

The event promises dueling bands, including Charleston Country group the Brady Smith Band. (Photo Credit: bradysmithcountrymusic.com)
