“My dream woman is Iman.”, said French designer Yves Saint Laurent of the woman who became one of his fashion muses and when one looks at the way in which she wears clothes it is easy to see why he was so taken with her. But she was also the fashion muse of many established designers in the fashion industry such as Gianni Versace, Halston, Donna Karen, Issey Miyake and Calvin Klein following her discovery by the photographer Peter Beard while she was still a student of political science at the University of Nairobi. The fact that she was studying this particular subject shows an early desire in her life to make a difference to the world around her. Following her discovery she made the move to America to pursue her career as a model in 1975. Vogue was her first job as a model just a year later but she soon became the cover model for many important magazines in the fashion industry. This led to her becoming known as a supermodel. Her husband is glam rocker David Bowie. They married in 1992 in Lausanne. Later their wedding was solemnized in June in Florence. They have one daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones who was born in 2000 and Iman is also the stepmother to Bowie’s son from a previous marriage whose name is Duncan Jones. The happy family live mainly in Manhattan and London. She also has a son from her previous marriage called Zulekha Haywood.
Iman is compassionate and as well as running her universal beauty business, she also finds the time to be a spokesperson for the Keep a Child Alive charity. She also helps the Children’s Defense Fund as well as been an amazing Ambassador for Save the Children. Raising awareness is also important to her and she works endlessly to raise awareness of their relief services out in greater East Africa. Her kind heart means that she also find time to help another important organisation Enough Project in an effort to terminate the universal commence in conflict minerals after taking an integral part in the public campaign in opposition to blood diamonds after she ended her contract with De Beers because of their bad ethics. She also helps to fight against racial discrimination and she has recently worked with Naomi Campbell and Bethann Hardison to help eradicate racial discrimination in fashion. Iman has also her own universal cosmetics brand for women of colour called Iman Cosmetics.
Iman knows how to pull off a stylish look and has shown over the years what a style icon she really is. Her use of large bangles stacked on her arms is very unique and interesting in a world where many people would not dare to wear more than one simple bangle.
But she has also been a style inspiration in her clothes. She wore an amazing gold jumpsuit perfectly teamed with a black belt with a gold buckle to the “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum Of Art. It was an absolute showstopper and she looked absolutely stunning.
She also proved that yellow was a colour which suited her down to the ground by wearing a sexy number to perfection while she also looks absolutely amazing in simple black dresses too. She is also never one to shy away from daring prints such as leopard print.
One word sums her up perfectly: Fabulous!
