Amber Riley is most known for her role as Mercedes Jones in the hit Fox TV show Glee and for her bubbly, down-to-earth personality. She is a role model for more curvy women like myself and proves that you don’t have to be a particular size to do well in life. Riley has been put down about her weight but she has never let it get in the way of achieving her dreams and for that she is an inspiration. She is proud of her figure.
That dream was, of course, to be an actress and singer and despite the rejection she got on American Idol by the producers when she was 17, Riley showed her determination to succeed by continuing to strive for what she wanted. And all that hard work paid off when she landed the role of Mercedes in Glee. Since then she has showed us all her amazing vocal range in difficult diva songs such as Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful, Don’t Make Me Over by Dionne Warwick and And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going by Jennifer Hudson as well as funky numbers like Bust Your Windows by Jazmine Sullivan and 4 Minutes by Madonna with fellow Glee cast member Chris Colfer. Her acting style is so natural and she has really pulled at the heartstrings in many of her scenes such as her character’s unrequited love story with her best friend Kurt played by Chris Colfer and her character’s hurt over not having a date for prom.
Amber also has a huge heart. She was a campaign spokesperson for Do Something and VH1 Save The Music Foundation’s 2011 “Battle for the Bands.” She also appeared in a PSA campaign and urged her fans via social media to take part in the campaign that gathered together young people in an effort to try to keep music as a subject in schools. She has also paired up with State Farm’s “Celebrate My Drive” campaign to promote safe awareness for Beginner Drivers, and encouragement for young people. Amber also paired up with Secret and PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center for the Mean Stinks campaign in 2011. She had been bullied herself and said of her bad experience to Teen Voices Magazine, “I have been made fun of and teased, you know, like every other person. I did have a friend in high school who was a bully and I separated myself from her because I didn’t want to be associated with that. Actually my senior year, she wrote me a letter saying she knew she was wrong. She kind of just like apologized because she did miss our friendship and we had two totally different high school experiences — she missed out because she was busy being mean.” Amber is also a really stylish person and I love her style. For the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2011 she wore a stunning black dress with beautiful detailing which I find a personal favourite outfit of mine. Another personal favourite of mine from her is the hat she wears as Mercedes which is so fantastic. I love it. But she has treated us to many beautiful dresses and more casual funky styles as well.
