Miss A Columnist

Kelly Fay is the Nashville Editor for Miss A. She is a firm believer that life wouldn’t be as enjoyable without a steaming fresh cup of coffee early in the morning, sipped from a beautifully detailed-painted mug. She values the small but beautiful things in life. She adores travel, even if it is to the local coffee shop; She lives for laughter with a friend, even if it is at my expense; and she loves a challenge, even if she doesn't come out a winner. She grew up and lived in beautiful sunny California where her love for the outdoors was sparked at an early age. Following her desire to be surrounded by beauty, she relocated to Humboldt County to attend Humboldt State University on a basketball scholarship. She received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Humboldt State in Kinesiology with an emphasis in teaching/coaching. Led by her inner-gypsy, upon graduation she traveled and lived in many different places. She called the Alaskan darkness home during the winter of ‘08, experienced” tea time” and” the tube” while living in London, and resided in the sandy dunes of Newport Beach, California for nearly two years. She moved to Nashville to experience the simplicity of the South while still engaging in city life. She spends her weekdays teaching preschool and personal training while she spends her weekends being active, exploring new places and eating good foods. She is an adventurous and spontaneous girl who enjoys a good time but also wants to make a difference in this crazy world!

Tis’ the season to be charitable! With the holidays swiftly approaching it is never too early to start crossing things off your gifting list. Why not double up your giving spirit by giving while giving back? Here are some companies that not only want to help you with your gift list but also support the less fortunate during this cheerful season.

If you are like me, you have coffee-loving friends. At The Well Coffeehouse in Green Hills, you can happily enjoy a cup of Joe knowing  it’s going to a good cause. The Well is a non-profit organization that “sells coffee, then gives the money away.” They have teamed up with two local non-profit organizations, The Living Water Project and Blood: Water Mission to develop clean water systems. Ok, so maybe not all the people on your list are as coffee-obsessed as yourself, no problem! The Well sells a variety of unique jewelry and clothing that is handmade by people in Honduras, Ethiopia, Uganda, India and Haiti. When you purchase these gifts you are not only improving a pal’s jewelry collection, you are improving lives. When a coffee addiction can go towards a good cause, that’s reason enough to make it a double!

Sometimes the best gift you can give someone is a donation. This year pick a group of friends and sidestep the gift-giving process by each opting to donate to a local non-profit organization instead. Take the money that you were planning on spending on your cronies and let them choose the organization that they want it to benefit. Here is a list of Nashville non-profit organizations and items they are in need of this season, so you will be certain your donation will go to good use.

So-So Happy Cards

The colorful characters and fun sayings are fit for any child in your life (or the adults who still act like children). So-So Happy will donate 10% of all the proceeds to various organizations that “encourage, educate and support young people all over the world who are struggling with the many challenges that face today’s youth.” Make a loved one happy while generating smiles all over the world!
