On November 15th, Brooklyn’s McCarren Park transforms into a winter wonderland, with its newly restored pool serving as a skating rink. Managed by the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn (OSA), the park will feature 7,200 square feet of ice – room for more than 300 skaters. And although the rink isn’t large enough for hockey leagues, the OSA does plan to offer classes, workshops, and demonstrations in hockey, curling, and figure skating.
The rink, which is one of only a handful in the borough, will also feature a holiday market hosted by the producers of the Northside Festival and food carts from local favorites such as No. 7 Sub, Anella, and Jimmy’s Diner. With food, shopping, and fun for locals and tourists alike, the OSA hopes to make it a Brooklyn tradition.
Located in Greenpoint, the rink will remain open everyday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. until January, possibly longer if it generates enough interest. Tickets cost $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and $4 for kids. Skate rentals are available for $5 per pair. Proceeds go toward improving parks in North Brooklyn, making it an affordable and eco-friendly alternative to the pricier Manhattan venues.
The OSA, which formed in 2003 and partnered with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation in 2008, is dedicated to raising funds to expand and improve local parks. It covers over 100 parks and green spaces in Community Board 1 including:
- McCarren Park
- McGolrick Park
- Bushwick Intel Playground
- Newtown Barge Terminal Playground
- Greenpoint Playground
- Rodney Park Center
- And many others
By managing the entire district, the OSA is able to use the funds from board members, events, and donations to subsidize less advantaged areas of community. Currently, the OSA is actively soliciting corporate sponsors for the McCarren Rink and holiday market. For more information on sponsorship, please email Lauren Lawson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
