Miss A Columnist

Aimee Landreneau-deTurk is Co-Editor for Miss A in New Orleans. She currently works at Tulane University as a contract specialist, and writes a personal blog, www.gratisNOLA.com, about all things “FREE” in the City. Needless to say, when she’s not at work Aimee is out and about enjoying everything the City has to offer, culinary and cocktail delights, art openings, live music, and of course festivals. Aimee loves festivals, and attends the New Orleans Jazz Fest all seven days. She is also a huge fan of all things Mardi Gras, and wouldn’t think about missing a single parade. Luckily, Aimee’s husband feels the same way, so they were married on the first day of Carnival season in the heart of the French Quarter. The wedding was Mardi Gras themed, of course!

The Friends of Saint Alphonsus just announced the highly anticipated third season of the Fun Under the Frescoes concert series. The St. Alphonsus Church is hosting four performances this season. The shows are on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m., and the series kicks off on November 13th, re-living the magic of the premiere show of the series, with Irish Channel native Paul Sanchez & Friends. The series continues celebrating the holidays with the beautiful voices of the New Orleans Nightingales on December 11th. The Creole String Beans will perform a rare semi-“unplugged” show featuring down home originals and classics from the local R&B and Swamp Pop songbook on January 8th. Celebrating a Fun Under the Frescoes tradition along with the rich history of the church, the series culminates on March 12th with an Irish Extravaganza featuring the McTeggart Irish Dancers and Beth Patterson & Her 2 Sexy Thugs. Admission to each performance is only $10 and includes 3 adult beverages.  Plus, Food Network “Chopped!” Champion and your favorite Ya-Ka-Mein Lady, Ms. Linda Green, will also be there with her delicious specialties.

This program would not be possible without the generous support of The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s Community Grants Program, The New Orleans Hash House Harriers’ Red Dress Run and our sponsors: Gordon Biersch Brewery & Restaurant, Vino Wholesale, the Boondock Saint, Old New Orleans Rum, Cathead Vodka, and Nacho Mama’s Mexican Grill.

The mission of this series is to bring an audience to St. Alphonsus and, as a result, increase membership as well as awareness to this historic treasure.

St. Alphonsus Catholic Church was built in 1855 to serve the needs of the Irish Catholic immigrants who began settling in the neighborhood in the 1840s. In 1979, the church was closed. After a continuing fall into decline, Friends of St. Alphonsus was formed in 1990; in 1996, the building was declared a National Historic Landmark. With glorious, yet deteriorating, ceiling frescoes and stained glass windows over a century old, the building is breathtakingly beautiful and has been featured in several television shows and movies… and the acoustics rock!
