Last month, one week of rain caused over $1 billion of damage across 15 counties in Colorado. Flood waters devastated hundreds of homes and businesses up and down the Front Range and washed away roads and bridges in various parts of the state. Join Headlines Salon and Handlebar Tavern on Monday, October 28, to help raise funds on behalf of United Way to strengthen relief efforts for the victims of the flooding.
United Way is an international charity organization that started right here in Denver, Colorado, in 1887. Their mission all over the world is to connect people and communities in need with the charities and other organizations that might offer relief and, when that isn’t possible, to mobilize the resources necessary to repair and improve those distressed communities. The primary aim of United Way is to promote self-sufficiency among the people it serves; it does so by fostering educational opportunities for underprivileged and at-risk youth in order to keep them in school through high school graduation and beyond as well as by providing programs to adults that cultivate financial literacy and job-hunting skills. In the case of flood relief, the various United Way chapters of Colorado have teamed up to create the United Ways of Colorado Flood Recovery Fund, which will offer support by means of housing assistance, clean-up projects, transportation, and food.
