Golf For Charity Around The World

Many golf enthusiasts find ways to incorporate their favorite pastime into their travel plans. If you’re a golf lover, why not go a step further and find ways for your love of golf to give back to others?

A Healthy Industry

No matter where you’re headed, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to sign up for a charitable tournament. According to the Golf 20/20 Report published by the World Golf Foundation, the sport of golf contributes almost $4 billion to charities each year, more than any other sport. Read below to find some cool ways to blend your passion for golf with a desire to give back. All the events listed are ones that tend to occur annually or even more frequently, so even if they’ve already occurred this year, you can plan to play in them during the next event.

Costa Mesa is a Californian destination that’s near the picturesque Pacific Ocean and is packed with shopping and dining opportunities, not to mention world-class golf courses. The Mesa Verde Classic Charity Golf Tournament is the city’s largest charity tournament, and proceeds go to support Costa Mesa Youth Sports. Last year’s event attracted more than 100 players, so it’s also a great chance to network with like-minded people.

During a golf tournament, I was able to network with an employee from Morningside Translations who was participating. I ended up finding out about their pro-bono translation program that could meet the needs of a few charities I love to help. Encounters like that could help make lasting connections as you eagerly explore unfamiliar locations.

On Thailand’s largest island, you’ll be treated to gorgeous stretches of sand and pineapple plantations to capture your attention when you’re away from the green. As the name suggests, the Phuket Oilfield Classic a charity golf tournament geared towards people who work in the oil industry, but you’ll have plenty of fun even if you don’t fall into that category. The next event will take place in April 2014, in support of Baan San Fan Orphanage, a safe haven for vulnerable kids.

Charity Events at the Astbury Golf Club

The Astbury Golf Club is situated in South Cheshire, England, along the Macclesfield Canal. Every year, club organizers decide to back a particular charitable cause throughout an entire season. Most recently, participants golfed in support of people who live with Motor Neurone Disease. The cause was especially close to some, since a popular club member is coping with the disease. If you’re planning a trip to this part of the United Kingdom, it’s worthwhile to see which cause is being focused on, and determine if you want to lend your efforts toward the outcome.

An Option if You’re New to Golf

Perhaps you’d like to have the experience of being in a charity golf event, but have never golfed before, or maybe, although you’re a seasoned golfer, you want to enter along with a friend who’s a complete beginner. In those cases, check out The TapRooT® 10th Annual Scramble Charity Golf Tournament. It’ll be held in Horseshoe Bay, TX in the second week of April 2014, with proceeds from the event aiding the Oasis of Love Women’s Shelter in Clinton, TN. No golfing experience is necessary, so it’s a great chance for people from all walks of life to putt for a worthy cause.

The possibilities above are just a sampling of the many ways you can get your fill of golf while traveling and do something great for people in need, too. Pack your clubs and tees and get ready for an unforgettable and beneficial getaway.
