My recent cravings for a scrumptious sea food dish brought my family and me to one of the nation’s most renowned sea food chains, Joe’s Crab Shack in Schaumburg, IL. From the variety of freshly-caught crab to juicy and flavorful shrimp, there is something on the menu for everyone to enjoy. After indulging in the Cajun Style Queen Crab, I lay back into my seat in satisfaction, only to have my waitress slip a leaflet onto the table and explaining to me that the restaurant is collecting donations in support of the charity, Share our Strength, in their No Kid Hungry Campaign. The campaign intends help end child hunger all across the nation by providing balanced meals to children in their homes and at school. However, what struck me the most is that instead of sticking to the conventional methods of collecting donations, Joe’s puts a unique twist on charity by benefiting both the donor and the children in need.

At Joe’s, making a donation to No Kid Hungry will not only help support a child in dire need of balanced meals that sustain their growth and development, but you will also be getting a free dish for yourself! Yes, you read correctly, supporting a highly important cause means that your next dish or appetizer at Joe’s is on the house; it’s a win-win situation. With a $5 donation, you will instantly receive a coupon for a free appetizer, while a $10 donation will get you an entree of your choice. So, without thinking twice, I jumped at the opportunity. As a result, I left the restaurant fully satisfied and content; I was able to contribute to bettering the lives of struggling children and I also got a free meal out of it.

The nationwide issue of child hunger is more prevalent than it may seem. About 1 in 5 children suffer from malnutrition all across the country, making them more susceptible to illnesses and conditions that can seriously affect their physical and mental development. This is why I am especially amazed at the fact that Joe’s supports such an important campaign as No Kid Hungry. Additionally, the way the restaurant chain encourages its customers to be charitable while raising awareness to an issue that is often swept under the rug was especially impressive.

In terms of my favorite restaurants, Joe’s has always been at the top of my list. The fresh and flavorful sea food combined fun boat-like ambiance and the cheerful nature of the staff would easily make every visit a wonderful experience. However, the fact that the restaurant is essentially rewarding its customers who donate to No Kid Hungry is a fantastic way to ensure that people in need get the help they deserve. While I would normally recommend that everyone visit Joe’s for an incredible selection of delicious sea food, the fact that the restaurant is concerned about feeding its customers and children around the country who desperately need it makes having dinner there even more appealing.
