There are many wonderful charities and organizations which are helping out in different ways these days. One unique organization which combines the music industry with charitable goals and outreach is Music for Relief. Founded by the band Linkin Park in 2005, Music for Relief is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based on the mission of helping those who are victims of natural disasters as well as taking steps to preserve the environment for future generations. The work of Music for Relief is achieved as a result of the efforts and dedication of the band, other music industry professionals and the fans who support them and their charitable endeavors. Since the beginning of their organization, Music for Relief has produced many accomplishments and is pursuing a variety of future goals as well.

The Good Which Music for Relief Has Accomplished

The main impetus for starting the organization was the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which resulted in approximately 230,000 lives being lost in addition to the wide array of destruction throughout many countries affected by this disaster. The members of Linkin Park knew that they had to act in response to such an occurrence and Music for Relief began. Since that time, Music for Relief has raised funds, made donations and organized volunteer groups to help out in various areas throughout the world.

Some of the natural disasters which Music for Relief responded to and provided assistance for include Hurricane Sandy, the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Hurricane Katrina, the Mena, Arkansas tornado, California wildfires and the Pakistan floods. Music for Relief has also responded to ongoing crises including the Zimbabwe cholera outbreak, recovery from natural disasters in Haiti and earthquake recovery programs in China.

In addition to responding to multiple natural disasters, Music for Relief has also initiated programs which help to preserve the environment. Their Send Dirt campaign helped to revitalize the wetlands in Louisiana by funding the introduction of additional plants to Terrebonne Parish. This organization has also put into motion various reforestation programs whereby trees would be planted in various fragile environmental areas to boost reforestation efforts such as locations where wildfires were rampant or other environmental factors endangered the forest areas. By partnering with various environmental organizations, hundreds of thousands of trees were planted in total throughout the United States, Canada, Israel, Haiti and Brazil.

These are just some of the accomplishments already seen by Music for Relief with their charitable donations and volunteer efforts. Additional prior programs can be viewed on the Music for Relief website.

Keeping an Eye on the Future

As well as helping with the continual need for natural disaster assistance, Music for Relief has a few programs currently in place. In response to the tornado which struck Moore, Oklahoma back in May of 2013, Music for Relief initiated a program to help those affected by the tornado. The organization is collecting funds and donations to help those who live in Moore. Donations from Music for Relief supporters will go towards rebuilding homes and schools, cleaning up debris and helping Moore residents to recover and put their lives back together.

Another program which is in place as a result of the efforts of Music for Relief is Power the World. This program came into existence after Linkin Park joined UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s campaign known as the Sustainable Energy For All Initiative in 2012. Music for Relief developed the Power the World campaign to help the more than 1.3 billion individuals in the world who live their daily lives without electricity access. The need for clean energy is a serious issue and one which Power the World tries to help out with.

Currently, the Power the World program is pursuing a few different campaigns. The first is providing solar power lightbulbs to individuals in Haiti, in partnership with EarthSpark International, so that they have clean energy means for doing simple things like enabling kids to complete their homework with proper lighting and making the dark hours of the day safe for all families. Another program under Power the World, made possible through partnering with WE CARE Solar, is to provide Solar Suitcases to Uganda clinics to enable proper birthing rooms/setups for pregnant women. The Solar Suitcases are mobile and provide light and power to Uganda hospitals to aid with labor/delivery. Lastly, Power the World is providing SOCCKETs, as a result of a partnership with Uncharted Play, to children in South America. The SOCCKETs are in fact soccer balls which gain energy through play and then can be used by South American families to light their homes as they turn into lamps when not in recreational use.

A recent addition to the Music for Relief programs, and Power the World campaign specifically, is a social game called RECHARGE. The online game was a creation by Kuuluu and Linkin Park. Those who play this game will be able to learn about clean energy, energy access and gain helpful tips on energy conservation. Players will also see the various Power the World items which are a part of the current organization programs.

Music for Relief, through their natural disaster assistance programs, environmental conservation campaigns and Power the World campaign, are pursuing many avenues to benefit individuals throughout the world and the environment as well.
