The international musical sensation and Broadway smash hit, Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” came to life Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at Tennessee Performing Arts Center, playing to a cheering Nashville audience of theater-loving children and adults alike.
Hilary Maiberger is lovely as the beautiful bookworm and beloved Disney princess, Belle. Maiberger’s beautiful voice is as strong as it is gentle and light, shining in one of the production’s new additions, “A Change In Me.”
Equally impressive, Darick Pead as the Beast moves smoothly from frightful to heartbroken, to wonderfully comical in his struggle to behave as a gentleman. “If I Can’t Love Her,” another song newbie, allows the opportunity to show the force of his voice, belting from the Beast’s tower above the audience.
Tim Rogan is hilarious as the arrogant, chauvinistic, grin flashing, Gaston. He leads the beautifully talented and energetic cast of Townspeople through his self-titled anthem with all the pomposity and rhyming self-flattery fans love so well.
Lumiere, Hassan Nazari-Robati, and Cogsworth, James May, are engaging as the enchanted frisky candlestick and uptight clock, and a witty support system for the love-struck Beast. Roxy York is also a success as the Mae West-esque magical opera singing wardrobe, Madame de le Grande Bouche. Along with Kristin Stewart’s Mrs. Potts, each character displays a touching struggle to prevent what is left of themselves from fading completely into household objects.
Ann Hould-Ward designed gorgeous, dazzling costumes, bringing each character to life. Scenic Designer Stanley A. Meyer has created a world of colorful, changing layers, with scenes flowing from brightly colored tavern dance parties, into dreary wolf infested forests, to champagne exploding dancing dishware celebrations, into dark forbidden towers.
The production comes to life as the first curtain rises and generates enough energy to carry squirmy, past bedtime children through the full length musical, to the last curtsy and bow.
Produced by NETworks Presentations, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is running now through Sunday, September 29, 2013 in TPAC’s Andrew Jackson Hall. The production will charm adults who grew up with this wonderful Disney classic and children who are falling in love with the enchanted tale for the first time.
