Let’s face it, we’ve all been to professional networking functions that are filled with silly ice breakers and uncomfortable one liners that leave us no more “networked” than we were before we arrived.
Enter, Philly Give & Get, a new charity “date” auction that combines professional networking with community engagement, taking the “work” out of networking. During their live auction events, attendees have the opportunity to bid on “Lots” that feature charismatic local professionals (“Experts”) coupled with one-of-a-kind adventures within the Greater Philadelphia Area. It’s like a date, but for professionals. No smooching required. But the goodness doesn’t stop there, all proceeds from the auctions go towards helping kids in Philadelphia.
On Thursday October 10, The MAKER Edition auction will be held at Johnny Brenda’s. The live auction will feature specialized “Auction Lot” prize packages that combine private, one-of-a-kind classes with different Philly-based artisans and expert craftspeople. Place the winning bid on a Give & Get “Lot” and you could be learning web design while on a trapeze, or video production while petting a sting ray.
There will be nine Auction Lots available at the October 10 event, including:
THE BREWERS: Join Homebrewed Events founders Garrett Williams and Meredith Rebar for a private lesson in brewing a customized craft beer.
THE BUTCHER: Learn the ins and snouts of breaking down a full pig with local wunderbutcher Bryan Mayer, plus how to package every different cut of meat, and specific recommendations on how best to prepare each cut.
THE BAKER: Bake break bread with R2L chef Peter Scarola, who will guide you in a personalized baking class and teach you the recipe of your choice.
THE SCULPTORS: Learn sculptural techniques ranging from the classic to the futuristic with renowned local sculptor Darla Jackson, owner of The Sculpture Gym, and Brandon H. Boulden, manager of the renowned NextFab Studio’s Laser Process.
THE PHOTOGRAPHERS: See the art of photography through two unique lens. Join Nathaniel Dobson (of Philly is Ugly fame) on location for a photo shoot, then enjoy a two-hour personal class with noted photojournalist, J. Kyle Keener where you can develop your skills at portraiture, studio photography, and many other key photographic techniques.
Two prizes will be awarded during the auction: The Most Valuable Philadelphian Award (MVP), sponsored by SEOM Interactive, will go to the Expert who attracts the highest bid of the evening and The Most Charitable Philadelphian Award (MCP), sponsored by Betsy Spivak Insurance will be awarded to the attendee who bids the most on an Auction Lot.
Philly Give & Get was developed and incubated at Indy Hall, the popular coworking space in Philadelphia’s Old City neighborhood. Indy Hall encourages its members to take risks and solve problems with creativity. In keeping with the spirit of this founding, Philly Give & Get selects nonprofit recipients that help young people in Philadelphia grow, learn, play, develop, and create great things together.
The MAKER Edition charity recipient is Scribe Video Center. Founded in 1982, the center offers children, youth, and adults the opportunity to become filmmakers, storytellers, and media creators. Scribe provides training in all aspects of film, video and audio production enabling each student to share their unique experiences via a variety of 21st century communication channels.
The volunteers behind Philly Give & Get are dedicated to spreading good ideas, and helping awesome people do awesome things in the city of Philadelphia. It sounds to me, like they are hitting the nail right on the head!
