Last weekend we floated into The Ritz-Carlton on South Street to see a room full of handsome men half dressed in polo gear and topped off in tuxes. What a sight! On their arms? Dazzling women wearing gowns by designer Elizabeth St. John. The Eco- Gala and 7th Annual Green Cup were chaired by Dr. Robert T. Do, CEO of Solena Fuels Corporation and president of the Capital Polo Club. Fashionably noted was model, Nina Bapraw elegantly attired in a stunning fuchsia gown with hair perfectly primped, and gave us a very warm welcome into the ballroom. The event brought together some of Washington D.C.’s most elite entrepreneurs, polo players, high net-worth investors and philanthropic socials to raise awareness about climate change and other environmental issues.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Joanne Ivancic, executive director of Advanced Biofuels USA. She explained that she became connected with Solena Fuels at 16th Annual Congressional Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Expo + Forum this past June when her company’s table was next to Solena’s. The conversation continued and Advanced Biofuels USA, a non-profit educational organization that advocates for advanced biofuels as energy security, was named the beneficiary of the 2013 Eco-Gala. Past beneficiaries have included ACORE, Earth Echo and Global Green. Spotted next was Ray Regan, veteran polo player and world traveler, who explained to us the significance of the Green Cup Polo event: “…it is the first polo match of its kind, and makes us all more responsible and aware of our carbon footprints.” The event concluded with a fashion show by Elizabeth St. John Designs and included models rocking elegant gowns while keeping up the pace to DJ Oz, the entertainer for the evening.
Days later we met up with the popular polo crowd again at the Capitol Polo Club in Poolesville, Md. for an afternoon of socializing, sipping and serious polo fun! We entered the grounds and were greeted by fabulous food trucks, which included the trendy Linda’s Luncheonette and summer favorite, Captain Cookie & the Milkman. We trotted over to the polo club in our equestrian outfits and walked to the VIP section and into a sea of seersucker, and men in their polo whites. Miss Maryland sang the national anthem, and the match concluded with a celebrity shoot out to show guests just how difficult polo really is! Sponsors included: Honest Tea, Liberation Capital, Honeywell, Four Gates, VM Ware and Solena Fuels.
