As zombies play a special role in the history of New Orleans‘ Voodoo culture, it is only natural that the living dead are being honored by another local event. On Saturday, September 21, the Z-Day NOLA festival and 5k run will be held at Laketown Park in Kenner. Proceeds from the event, which will feature live music, an obstacle course, and plenty of food, will go to support the LA/SPCA, as well as its Jefferson Parish chapter.

Between 4,000 and 8,000 runners are expected to participate in Z-Day’s 5k, which will require escape from zombies through a military-style obstacle course. Between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. heats will take place every half hour, allowing everyone the opportunity to experience the most realistic “escape” possible. Runners that reach the 5k’s end with all of their belt flags intact will receive the coveted Survivor Medal to commemorate their victory.

The accompanying festival, which will take place from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. will feature plenty of entertainment and activities to keep the party going all day long. Scheduled musical performances include Tryal and Error, Little Freddie King, Hot 8 Brass Band, Flow Tribe, The Stooges Brass Band and Johnny Sketch & The Dirty Notes. In addition, attendees can show off their zombie skills – competing to be crowned the best in arm and leg throwing, intestine eating, head bowling and more.

A variety of food and drink options, including both non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, will be available at Z-Day Nola. Also for purchase will be event t-shirts (like those provided to all registered runners and zombies) and drawstring backpacks. Attendees are encouraged to bring cash, as debit and credit capabilities are not guaranteed.

Additional details regarding the 5k and festival, as well as event-day transportation, can be found on the official Z-Day Nola website.

Celebrating its 125th year of service, the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LA/SPCA) continues to uphold its mission of “improving the quality of life for all of the animals we encounter daily.” The organization provides care and shelter for homeless and unwanted animals, as well as spay/neuter, lost-to-found, and wellness services.
