Miss A Columnist

Vennessa Ortiz is a twenty-something lover of art, fashion and music. Professionally, she works in the retail marketing industry. Personally, she makes jewelry and paints. Vennessa’s art has been showcased in a few DC art shows and she is in the process of creating her online boutique for jewelry along with other handmade items.
Having a degree in Fine Arts fuels Vennessa to expose herself to as much art as possible. Her travels to Greece to study dark room photography has left her yearning to travel as much as possible. She loves classic fashion, music from the 60’s, vintage suitcases, flowers, live music and good eats; she has a hippy soul but a city girl heart. When she is not creating art or making jewelry she is searching for cool indie bands playing DC.

If you are like me, you have a Pinterest board devoted to hair you wish you had. Stop wishing and start getting YOUR hair in shape.  Healthier hair appears fuller, colors are more vibrant and breaking is reduced encouraging hair growth.  A great time to shift focus on your hair is now; your hair has just been battered by the sun, chlorine, highlights, salt water and the usual heat styling. It is time to take action and get your hair back into shape.

FIRST, FOCUS ON THE SCALP:

Your scalp is where you hair lives and grows.  If your scalp is out of shape and unbalanced your hair is not going to be its healthiest.  If you have dry, oily, itchy, sensitive scalp you might need to do something about it.

Not to get too scientific, but your scalps overall pH is composed of Alkaline and Acid and there should be a healthy balance of both.   Sun, weather, harsh products, environmental stress all contribute to an unbalanced scalp.

There are many things you can do to try to create and maintain a healthy scalp.   I use the Phytopolliene Treatment bi-weekly.   Phytopolliene harnesses the natural power of rosemary, sage, cypress, eucalyptus, and lemon which instantly purifies the scalp and increases circulation.

NEXT, CARE FOR YOUR HAIR:

Are you are noticing your hair breaking, feeling brittle, appearing dull, lifeless or seeing split ends? Yes, then adding moisture to your hair will aid in its overall appearance. Frequent use of the blow drier, flat iron, curling iron and products all suck the moisture out of your hair. Hair gets thirsty too! Also, an added bonus is that healthy hair can extend the life of your color.

Hot oil treatments, intense hydrating conditioners and thermal protectant will help with hydration.  Once a month I try to treat my hair to an oil treatment ( I use Phyto’s Huile D’ales) the  essential oils smooth , condition and protect the hair shaft from further damage.

NEED A PUSH START?

My stylist recommends a deep conditioning treatment at least once a month.  Sugar House Day Spa and Salon offers a Phyto conditioning treatment that includes a customized treatment for your scalp and hair.  You hair feels and looks rejuvenated after one treatment, it is amazing!  Treatments start at $25 and are worth every penny.  One of the many b.enefits of having the treatments done at a salon, other than the professional grade products, is the hot towel/hair dryer; Heat opens the hair cuticles allowing the treatment to get into the hair follicle.

Sugar House Day Spa and Salon has extended a special treat for Miss A readers for the month of September, a complimentary conditioning treatment with any blowdry or haircut.

Just print it out and bring it in – Time to treat your hair ladies!
