Going to bed hungry and not having enough food to feed a family is very real in Washington. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports on food security in the United States, which means “the access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life.” In a 2011 report, 14.9% or 17.9 million U.S. households were food insecure at some time during 2011. In that same report, 5.7% or 6.8 million U.S. households had very low food security at some time during 2011. For the state of Washington, of the 2.7 million households, 15.4% had low food security, while 6.2% of households had very low food security.
Hosted by KING 5’s Jenni Hogan, the festivities will feature Seattle-based Darigold’s giant, 16-foot refrigerator filled with a farmalicious line-up of local favorites and activities for the whole family. Crush’s own chef, Jason Wilson, will be serving some delicious goodies for all, including Darigold buttermilk donuts while the Seattle School of Rock will be performing pop hits through the decades.
The Fun Fridge event was created by Darigold to mark their recent year-long commitment to provide two pallets of milk per week to Northwest Harvest, in part to help fight hunger in Washington State. The mission of Northwest Harvest is to provide nutritious food to hungry people statewide in a manner that respects their dignity, while fighting to eliminate hunger, providing over 1.8 million meals each month to families in need. Their vision is to have ample nutritious food available to everyone in Washington State. By supporting their mission, Darigold is also encouraging the public to donate non-perishable items to help fill the other refrigerators on site the day of the event, all of which will be donated to Northwest Harvest.
