Remember oo-ing and ahh-ing over boy bands back in the ’80s and ’90s? Well now we can do it all over again with Joey McIntyre from New Kids on the Block and his new play “The Kid” performing at the Garner Galleria Theatre.
“We are honored to be starting our journey at The Denver Center for the Performing Arts and to be part of its history of launching new productions. We are grateful to Denver Center Attractions for giving us a home to develop this exciting new musical,” says Eli Gonda, director of “The Kid.”
As the the youngest member of New Kids on the Block, also known as the biggest “boy band” in history, Joey McIntyre takes on this inspiring, entertaining and deeply personal coming-of-age story. He takes the audience on a journey from his hometown in Boston to sold-out stadium tours, where three generations of family drama becomes three decades of stage dreams. With music from his childhood, music he helped make famous and music that inspires him, “The Kid” is about the power of family – the family we’re born to, the families we make – and how sometimes finding your own voice starts with learning how to listen. “The Kid” shows us that every stage is different—and you may have to play them all before you find your stage.
Although Joey McIntyre loved being in New Kids on the Block, his first love has always been the stage. He has been a lifelong member of the Footlight Club, America’s Oldest Theatre Community, in Boston since he was 6 years old and has been in Broadway roles such as “Wicked”‘s Fiyero. Off-Broadway plays include “tick, tick…boom!” as Jonathan; Fonzie in “Happy Days: The Musical”; “Barking Sharks” and numerous readings, workshops and TV shows. Joey also went on to make four solo albums, the first of which, “Stay The Same,” went gold.
