Now granted, I have seen only a small percentage of this world so far, but I’ve heard about some pretty cool stuff. I have never been to China, but I have heard of the Great Wall. I’ve never been to Mexico, but I’ve heard of the great Monarch Butterfly migration. And I’ve never been to Australia, but I’ve heard about the Great Barrier Reef. Yes, I’ve heard about all of those cool things, but I’m sure that other people in the world have heard about the cool things to see in the U.S.A.: the Washington Monument, the Statue of Liberty, the Grand Canyon, the Rocky Mountains, and, arguably one of the coolest things America has to brag about – Robert Downey Jr..
It’s true, the Sherlock Holmes, Iron Man and Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang star has had his troubles, but the way he has risen above them is enough to irrevocably erase them from everyone’s memories. However, he might not be so quick to dismiss them, especially when there are others suffering from similar circumstances. Downey Jr. is an avid supporter of the Midnight Mission, a charity that will be 100 years old next year. The aim of the organization is to lift up those people who have hit rock bottom, lost everything and are utterly alone. They provide everything from personal hygiene needs to counseling to job training. The charity prides itself on simply helping others, without sermonizing, and treating every person, whether man, woman or child, who comes to them with respect and warmth. Keeping his roguish persona intact even through giving, the actor also supports Robin Hood, an organization that has been fighting poverty for the past 25 years. It was founded by Paul Tudor Jones II, a former hedge fund manager. As the name suggests, the super rich are combating poverty throughout New York, primarily through one large charity gala every year during which high profile investors and other hedge fund managers gather to donate money towards everything from health care services to emergency food and everything in between, such as building new libraries and new housing. Since it’s beginning in 1990, Robin Hood has raised over $900 million.
The actor also has a soft spot for the cute and cuddly – babies and animals. Downey Jr. supports the Orca Network, an organization aimed at raising awareness about porpoises and whales in the Pacific Northwest and preserving their habitat. The orcas have no natural enemies, which makes humans their only threat. The actor also supports March of Dimes, a network working to prevent premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality by educating parents and giving them a support system so that the new babies will be happy and healthy. In addition to all of that, Downey Jr. gives back to the people who gave him his first and second chances. The Motion Picture and Television Fund Foundation is an organization made to help those in the film and television who have given most of their lives to the industry, but who are now the ones at a disadvantage. The foundation provides health services and emotional support to these people, as well as providing specialized day care services for them.
To say that we love Robert Downey Jr. because of his wit, style and charm wouldn’t be incorrect, but as luck would have it, he gives us even more reasons to love him as he gives back the good fortune and goodwill bestowed upon him in his time of need. Come back next time to find out which handsome face is lending a hand as well as a smile.
