I remember hearing a recommendation a very long time ago about the best fish in town at a food trailer on Second Street and Congress. While I didn’t get a chance to try it in the original location, I finally tried Turf N Surf Po’ Boy and the recommendation was correct- it’s pretty amazing!
Owner and Chef Ralph Gilmore is influenced by New Orleans and only serves the highest quality ingredients. The simple menu offers blackened, fried or grilled fish options available in a po’ boy, tacos or a salad.
Turf N Surf moved into Lavaca Street Bar in February and has made a great new home for the fish shop. The new location is an ideal fit for the restaurant as diners can enjoy it during the day, for dinner or the late night crowd when the shop is open until 3 a.m. on weekends.
For our sampling, my friend and I started out with the hush puppies, which were just excellent. They had amazing flavor and were perfectly crispy yet juicy. We also tried some of the spicy chicken wings and the barbecue shrimp which was simply out of this world. While I’m not the biggest okra friend, my date highly recommended the fried okra.
I think my favorite starter though was the bacon-wrapped shrimp with asparagus. It was such a nice combination of tastes and I liked that it’s a healthier option than some of the fried dishes. It’s the perfect appetizer when visiting the bar just for a few drinks as well.
My friend had the catfish po’ boy and loved everything about it. I had the blackened shrimp po’ boy for my entree and it was delightful! While most of my random food cravings tend to fall into the ethnic food category, blackened shrimp po’ boy is one of the dishes that I’ll get a strong craving for every now and then and not one that is too easy to find a great dish of in Austin. This is my new go to – it was simply ideal and just as good, if not better, than the last time I had this dish in the Florida Everglades a few months ago.
