A cool August summer breeze rolled over the Great Meadows Lawn at Fort Mason this past Saturday morning towards a group of about 50 yogis who came out to Yoga Rocks the Park - a national yoga and live music festival put on by Natural Fitness, that is now held in over 14 cities across the US attracting over 400 yogis and their families. Saturday, August 10 kicked off the first session of the San Francisco series. The event will take place weekly on Saturday mornings during the summer from 9 – 11 a.m. until September 14, 2013.

The day included a 75-minute all-levels yoga class with views overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. As well as the adult class, a complement kids’ yoga camp is held that is designed for children ages 3-10, which even included board games. Instructors Becca Schneider and Nicole Cronin, who together hold over 20 years of experience, led the class as Ryan Lucero spun a live set of modern music, that uplifted the atmosphere. San Francisco resident Leila Burrows came out to support her friends hosting the event.  “Practicing outdoors on a Saturday morning sounded fun, and I really enjoyed the class,” she said.

The $15 ticket to this event, included complimentary water bottles from HINT Water, Luna snack bars in various flavors such as delicious carrot cake, Pop Chips, Le Boulange Bakery granola packs, a raffle giveaway, and much more with 10% of net profits benefiting a local charity hand-selected by the yoga instructors. This particular session went to benefit Golden Gate National Park Conservancy, a non-profit partner that supports over 30 beloved national park sites north and south of the Golden Gate.

The event also featured, what Natural Fitness called, “a vendor village,” which provided access to meet with YRP’s national and local partners. One of the tents set up belonged to Burning Heart Yoga, a brand new yoga center located in the Marina, who handed out free t-shirts, coupons, and promoted their free yoga day for all of San Francisco which will be held on August 24, 2013. “We heard about YRP through Facebook and thought it would be a great fit, and a way to support the community,” said Caramia Tambornino, Yoga Leader and Head Instructor at Burning Heart Yoga.

According to Jenn Perell, YRP Event Director, the purpose of this event is to spread the love and bring some community to the West Coast. This was the first time YRP was held in San Francisco and it is anticipated to continue growing. “While the format for each session will remain the same, the experience is going to be different. Each session will include different sponsors and vendors, teachers, musicians, as well as of course the people attending,” says Perell.
