Imaginary Worlds Delights At The Atlanta Botanical Garden

Attending Imaginary Worlds is a bit like stepping into a fantasy-land.  You know the giant horticultural creatures aren’t real, yet they look as though they’ll come to life at any moment.

On display through October 2013, Imaginary Worlds is a collection of 19 towering mosaiculture works of art by the nonprofit International Mosaiculture of Montreal. Mosaiculture is “the horticultural art of creating giant topiary-like sculptures” using thousands of annual plants that cover an intricate steel form and are fed by a complex irrigation system. The results are larger-than-life creatures that not only look alive, but actually are. Atlanta is the first U.S. city to host one of these exhibits.

As guests stroll through the gardens, they are greeted by a giant, shaggy dog glancing over its shoulder, two elaborately patterned cobras with winding bodies, a pair of enormous fish dancing on water, and a 25-foot tall goddess emerging from the earth. Three bunnies playfully nibble grass and a massive unicorn complete with golden horn and hooves gracefully bows to passersby.

A particularly enchanting way to see the exhibit is to attend Cocktails in the Garden, which takes place each Thursday evening through September. Each month, there is a signature cocktail, along with a variety of drinks that guests can purchase and sip while they meander through the exhibit. There are also DJs and cooking demonstrations.  Since the entire garden is accessible during the exhibit, guests can visit other attractions like the Japanese, Rose and Rock Gardens.

Imaginary Worlds is a perfect outdoor activity for the entire family, while Cocktails in the Garden couldn’t be more romantic.
