Miss A Columnist

Lesley Haenny is the Seattle Editor for Miss A. She is an Air Force wife now living in the Seattle area. Prior to living in Seattle, Lesley spent 7 years in Washington, DC, working as a Congressional liaison. She grew up in a small, mountain town in Southern California, sandwiched between an older sister and a younger brother. Her two hard working parents taught her to always go for the clearance rack, bring your lunch everyday, work hard for what you have, and always take the opportunity to travel and play outside. Lesley has been actively involved in various charities such as the Animal Resource Foundation, Komen For the Cure, Prevent Cancer Foundation, American Diabetes Association and the Race for Hope (benefitting the National Brain Tumor Society and Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure).

Snohomish River Run To Benefit YMCA

Running keeps us in shape and running for great causes helps the soul. On Sunday, October 27, join 1,500 other Pacific Northwest runners for the Snohomish River Run benefiting the YMCA of Snohomish County.

Beginning at Rotary Park in Everett, your choice of the half marathon or 10k runs along the beautiful Snohomish River into the city of Snohomish. Bring your friends and family to cheer you on at the finish line and end your time knowing that you helped support a very worthy cause.

The YMCA of Snohomish County has been serving and strengthening the community since 1901. The Snohomish River Run will support two specific programs of the YMCA, ACT! (Actively Changing Together) and Y-Community.

ACT! is a nutrition, activity and self-improvement program for youth ages 8-11 and teens ages 12-14 and their parents. This is a community-based program for youth who are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. A YMCA Health & Well-Being Team teaches fun ways to be active, eat and create healthy lifestyles for the whole family.

Y-Community program helps to reduce the trauma of homelessness for children and families in Snohomish County by:
1) acting as a catalyst for collaboration by bringing housing agencies together to collaborate and maximize services;
2) offering family-oriented activities which counteract the state of crisis that many families regularly experience; and
3) building assets in young people who need support and strength to thrive in an uncertain world.

I highly encourage everyone to check out the Ironheart Foundation aid station at the race. The Foundation supports cardiac patients and families worldwide by raising awareness through our active lifestyles. In doing so, they strive to promote healthy heart living, provide resources, referrals and support to patients, communities and organizations. Along the way, Ironheart brings attention to the most common birth defect, Congenital Heart Defects, and the number one cause of death, heart disease.
