Miss A Columnist

Vennessa Ortiz is a twenty-something lover of art, fashion and music. Professionally, she works in the retail marketing industry. Personally, she makes jewelry and paints. Vennessa’s art has been showcased in a few DC art shows and she is in the process of creating her online boutique for jewelry along with other handmade items.
Having a degree in Fine Arts fuels Vennessa to expose herself to as much art as possible. Her travels to Greece to study dark room photography has left her yearning to travel as much as possible. She loves classic fashion, music from the 60’s, vintage suitcases, flowers, live music and good eats; she has a hippy soul but a city girl heart. When she is not creating art or making jewelry she is searching for cool indie bands playing DC.

Balayage 101

My hair has been almost every color in the rainbow and I have experienced almost every service hair can have. However, during my recent trip to Sugar House Day Spa & Salon, I was distracted by hair stylist who was using plastic food wrap and cotton to color his clients hair. Since I myself was there for a while, I was able to see the end product which was gorgeous dimensional yet natural color; I knew I had to talk to the stylist about the process!

As I spoke with the Sugar House Day Spa & Salon stylist Luis Bujia, he filled me in on the new service and why 80% of his clients have switched over from foil highlights to a new color service called BALAYAGE. Any woman who lightens her hair knows that the dreaded regrowth line is a huge problem. One day it is semi-noticeable the next it is prominent and unbearable.

Luis explains that “Balayage maintains a natural depth to the hair making it look even more natural and grow out is extremely manageable. This means you can stretch your in-between color appointments by a few weeks.”

Balayge which is a French technique formed in the 1970’s literally means to sweep. It is this free-hand painting motion which gets rid of the horrible regrowth line. There is no more stripey hair; instead the section of hair is painted in a way that the end result I bright, fresh and perfectly sun-kissed hair. Chances are if you have experience hair envy to Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Aniston, Mila Kunis, Sarah Jessica Parker, or Giselle it is because they are sporting Balayage.
Luis also stressed that “The Balayage journey begins with retraining your eye to explore lightness in a totally different way, no more stripes. You are creating timeless looking hair that easily transforms from spring/summer to winter/fall.”
