Shopping for clothes in the middle of the summer is no easy task. On one hand, it’s still hot as all get-out, so the idea of stocking up on sweaters and boots seems horrendous; on the other hand, you probably have most of what you need for the hottest months already (let’s be honest – you bought your bikini in February), so buying more tank tops seems redundant. However, we at Miss A have an itch that can’t be scratched – you might call it the Carrie Bradshaw effect. So we’re making use of the elusive season that those in the fashion industry call Pre-Fall, and are going to show you how to make runway work for every day.
Over at Céline, Phoebe Philo showed us her signature luxe materials and continued to push buttons with her “Amish couture”- esque styling. One accessory we can totally get behind, however, is the oversized straw hat. Usually reserved for days at the beach, this version from Kangol, can be paired with sleeveless blouses and an a-line skirt from Halston Heritage for a look that’s half prairie girl, half Wednesday Addams…in the best possible way.
Barbara Bui wowed us with a Pre-Fall collection that oozed sleek sexiness. One of the standout pieces was this colorful leather jacket, seen in many incarnations, from letterman to biker, all over the runways. For another bright option that will transition smoothly through the seasons, try this one from W118. Wear it with a simple, slinky white dress from A.L.C. to turn up the heat on sticky summer nights.
Stella McCartney’s Pre-Fall line hit all the right notes, creating a 70s throwback look that was still perfectly modern. The clothing is perfect for cooler days, but if you need your McCartney kick right away, head for the shoe department. Her heeled snakeskin loafers are beautifully transitional, and can be worn with everything from dresses to suits.
If you’re looking for an update on your traditional LBD, try one with a striking asymmetrical hemline as seen at Balenciaga. This one by Robert Rodriguez is clearly chic, but can be electrified with kooky accessories, like the Balenciaga team showed in this collection. If you’re not totally on board with the idea of a…day kerchief? Try some bangles by Adia Kibur, and flashy Charlotte Olympia sandals to seal the deal.
The team at Nina Ricci has perfected the look of ladylike pieces with high fashion edge. Their most recent Pre-Fall collection was no different, seamlessly blending timeless silhouettes with modern accents and accessories. Florals are definitely having a moment again, and this silk skirt from the collection was a standout piece. Try this Topshop version for a more budget-friendly option, and pair with a short-sleeved knit from 10 Crosby Derek Lam for when the evenings get cooler.
Sweatshirts aren’t just for the gym anymore, as evidenced by Marni’s Pre Fall outing. Marni is one of the best lines for the intellectual cool girl, so bring out your quirky side and pair this MM6 by Maison Martin Margiela topper with a studded skirt by Kate Spade, and add the finishing touch with some impressive Marc by Marc Jacobs motorcycle boots.
Phillip Lim knows all about how to take street and make it chic. His Pre Fall collection was no exception, as he took hip hop elements and blended them seamlessly with American basics with luxe detailing. One of the standout pieces in the collection was the backpack, re-imagined in sleek white leather and minimal hardware. Get the same look with this ASOS backpack, and wear it with trousers and heels for an unexpected pop of cool.
