Miss A Columnist

Hayley Orzech is the News & Opinion Editor for Miss A. She found her passion in writing. She grew up in Detroit, MI and though it has been through the mill, she still has faith in it. She just graduated from Northern Michigan University and believes that you have not seen snow until you’ve spent a winter in Marquette on the shores of Lake Superior. She is in love with traveling and her hope now is to see as many places as she can while pursuing her dreams. She grew up in a large Polish family, full of firefighters. If she has learned anything other than how to not set her house on fire, it is that you can never take your blessings for granted because they might be up in flames before you can blink.

She adores traveling and meeting new people from all walks of life. She reads and writes everyday in between navigating her early 20’s. She's made it her mission to spread the wealth to those who are less fortunate. We are all in this together, after all.
She has had the privilege of adventures like snowboarding down the Rocky Mountains, jumping off of a cliff into clear, beautiful Lake Superior, hearing music on the Detroit River, running down a sand dune into the Au Sable River, looking up at the Statue of Liberty, climbing up a waterfall in Jamaica, letting her fingertips graze over a shark in Key West, hiking in California, gazing at Mount Rushmore, holding onto a giant Redwood tree and so many others that she can hardly believe her luck. All she truly want out of life is to have more adventures while helping others and doing the thing she love to do most: write.

Beauty Inside And Out: Carrie Underwood

It’s rare that one woman can create an anthem for a common issue among other women. Sure, there’s plenty of songs about moving on and finding a new man after the old one, but there’s only a few that describe the true feelings of a strong woman after a cheater breaks her heart and only one that is so catchy that it remains on the radio waves almost four years after its release. Carrie Underwood, the former “American Idol” winner turned country music superstar, has been charming us since she first smiled during her audition for the TV show and wowing us with her voice ever since. In 2010, her charm and presence were enough to convince Olay to take her on as their first ever spokeswoman in North America to represent their entire skin care line. Even with all of that fame and high status, the superstar has never seemed to let it go to her head. She has even famously said that if her career began to hurt her marriage, she would give up performing in a heartbeat and with a heart as big as that, the fact that she supports nearly 20 charities should be no surprise.

The country songstress isn’t shy about expressing her love for everything dear to her, whether it’s her marriage, her family or even her hometown of Checotah, Oklahoma. In 2009, Underwood began her own foundation, C.A.T.S., which stands for Checotah Animal, Town, and School Foundation. The charity is solely dedicated to serving the singer’s hometown through needed services, repairs, money for school improvement and providing new animal shelters along with the equipment and food needed to run them. When speaking about her charity, she said, “I feel blessed to be able to create something as a way of giving back; to say thank you.”

Since a major part of the money donated to her own charity goes to animal welfare, it probably goes without saying that Underwood would support other animal rescue and safety charities and non-profits such as PETA, a huge organization dedicated to the ethical treatment of animals. The super-active organization is aimed at ending all cruelty, experimentation on and use for fur, food and entertainment of all animals. Underwood is also an avid supporter of The Humane Society, the nation’s largest organization dedicated to bringing an end to all animal cruelty and finding new, safe environments for the survivors, as well as campaigning for endangered wildlife.

The country superstar isn’t just concerned with our furry friends, however. Many of her favorite charities are dedicated to improving the life of children, such as the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes, a foundation whose aim is to fund research for the cure of  Type 1 Diabetes in children and adults. Though the foundation is located in Colorado and serves over 80,000 of its residents, it also has national and international campaigns. The country singer also gives back to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the nation’s third largest healthcare charity. The hospital’s code is that they will never turn a child away because of their family’s inability to pay for their medical care. Underwood is also dedicated to making sure that underprivileged children and their families have a safe, sturdy foundation to live on by supporting Habitat For Humanity, a large non-profit organization dedicated to building homes and safe communities for those living in poverty and unsafe living conditions who are otherwise unable to change their circumstances.

Underwood also supports charities which aim to help people through her own passion: music. Becoming one of the largest charities to pioneer this effort is Music For Relief, an organization founded by Linkin Park, which aims to respond to areas devastated by natural disasters and help those people affected through building new housing, providing food and medical care, all while promoting education about global warming and the effect it is having on our planet.

And the list goes on. With almost 20 charities benefiting from her support, it seems safe to say that even more will be benefiting from her philanthropy soon enough. Come back next week to find out which of our beauties is showing off their beauty inside and out!
