Summer 2013: Hottest Sandals

It is now July and the summer heat is getting serious.  You may have thought that your old sandals from a few seasons ago would cut it, but after the endless rounds of BBQs, beach trips, and the unending treks to and from the office, all while the thermometer is hovering around the mid-90s mark?  Perhaps not.  To sweeten the deal, virtually all of your favorite online shopping destinations are having their summer blowout sales. Let’s take a trip around the internet to find the most attractive footwear, at every price point, for every occasion.

These Rebecca Minkoff beauties are perfectly urban and equally at home in the office as for a weekend away. The deep olive color is one of the new neutrals we’ve been seeing everywhere this season and the buckles and ankle detailing are the perfect compliment to its sturdy three-inch heel.

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen were largely responsible for the street style onset of gladiator sandals back in 2006 and since then they’ve become a summer staple. This pair by iiJin is an updated take on the classic with a distinctly gothic flair – the studs are everything. Wear them with a shift dress from Alexander Wang and some oversized sunnies for a relaxed city ensemble.

These platforms from Target Xhilaration have a memory foam-like insole, so the heel will prove no problem while running errands day-to-day.  The coral color is perfectly summery and the slightly pointed toe gives them edge. These will be perfect for days at the beach or a weekend in the countryside – pair with a contrasting neon toenail polish from Essie for another unexpected pop of color.

If you’ve been dreaming of an exotic vacation in on a far-flung tropical island, take the first step by purchasing a pair of sandals that are just as comfy as flip flops, but nowhere near as…questionable.  These ones by K. Jacques X Opening Ceremony will look perfect with a healthy tan and you’ll soon feel just as relaxed and sunny as Giselle Bündchen on the beaches of Rio.

If you’re more art-house than anything goes, these Marni slip-ons are functional and chic. Burgundy is an unexpected choice for the summer, but still works as a great backdrop for a variety of colors and prints. Worn with a topknot bun and square frames, you’ll be able to perfectly channel your intelligence and beauty in a wonderfully quirky package.

If you’d like to invite a little Zooey Deschanel-esque quirkiness into your daily life, try these Marc by Marc Jacobs wedges on for size. The polka dots are an unexpected, but totally on-trend, detail and the double buckle is equal parts retro and feminine. They’re even slightly reminiscent of the Miu Miu flats everyone was going gaga for last year, but with more height and at a more reasonable price point.

The fact that this feminine shoe by Dolce Vita is equipped with a gold toe and snakeskin heel strap makes its minty green body even more exciting. The wedge is comfortable and low enough for sprinting across a busy crosswalk, but the sandal itself is fancy enough for brunching with the in-laws. A match made in heaven, no?

If the Roman god Mercury were re-incarnated and lived in a loft in Tribeca, he/she would probably be wearing these Chloe sandals. The ties on the ankle are positively winged in the most charming way, and the triple-toned leather is both Romanesque and perfectly modern. With standout sandals like these you can keep your outfit simple – a toga perhaps?

Last but not least, the crème de la crème of all summer sandals. This elegant pair of sandals by Giuseppe Zanotti certainly features sky-high heels, but these are definitely more red carpet-ready than Barbie-esque. Channel your inner Victoria Beckham with a wiggle dress by Erdem and throw in a soccer player as arm candy for good measure.
