Miss A Columnist

Lesley Haenny is the Seattle Editor for Miss A. She is an Air Force wife now living in the Seattle area. Prior to living in Seattle, Lesley spent 7 years in Washington, DC, working as a Congressional liaison. She grew up in a small, mountain town in Southern California, sandwiched between an older sister and a younger brother. Her two hard working parents taught her to always go for the clearance rack, bring your lunch everyday, work hard for what you have, and always take the opportunity to travel and play outside. Lesley has been actively involved in various charities such as the Animal Resource Foundation, Komen For the Cure, Prevent Cancer Foundation, American Diabetes Association and the Race for Hope (benefitting the National Brain Tumor Society and Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure).

Interview With Victoria’s Secret Angel Candice Swanepoel

On Wednesday, July 10, Victoria’s Secret in Bellevue Square hosted the first stop on the Victoria’s Secret U.S. of Angels Summer Swim Tour. The tour showcases the hottest swimwear of 2013. Victoria’s Secret Angel, Candice Swanepoel was in attendance and presented the latest styles to the public.

Candice made her entrance in the store, wearing a beautiful V-neck silk jumper with pink floral print and ruffle-cut shorts. The jumper could easily be worn as a swimsuit cover-up at the pool or beach side. She posed for the photographers holding a pink swim safety life ring which had “U.S. of Angels Victoria’s Secret Seattle 2013” printed on it.

After posing for photos, Candice discussed some of her favorite swimwear pieces for 2013, which includes the twist bandeau, which looks nice and provides much needed support. She also loves the mix and match pieces in neon colors with embellishments. She mentioned the great new online tool Victoria’s Secret provides to its online customers, the Beach Sexy Bikini Mixer, which allows customers to mix and match tops and bottoms to create a perfect suit for any size woman. She also mentioned how much she was looking forward to visiting Pike’s Place Market and trying some of the fresh produce available!

Fellow Miss A writer, Andrea Davis-Gonzalez and I had the unique opportunity for a one-on-one interview with her.

Q: You spend so much time working, what do you enjoy doing when you have free time?
A: I book tickets to the beach, try to get some quiet time and visit my friends and family. I like to do road trips, especially since I am always in an airplane. I like to drive to small towns where nobody knows about fashion.

Q: You were discovered at such a young age. How have you seen yourself grow over the past ten years?
A: Just being with Victoria’s Secret has really been kind of a safe place to grow up. I joined them when I was 18 or 19 and seeing the same people, the same support group, you grow and try different things. That’s been great. For us, so much happens in such a little amount of time that you change, your mind grows, you find out what you like and what you don’t like. I’m still changing, even when I think I know everything or know myself well.

Q: You have had the opportunity to travel the world. What are some of your favorite places?
A: Brazil, I absolutely love Brazil. I love every time they tell us we are going to St. Bart’s. I love Paris and that European feeling. Turkey is amazing. There are so many. Each place has something different, but I tend to stay in the warm tropical climates. I’m dying to go to Jamaica, Vietnam, and Thailand. A lot of places to explore!

Q: You have spent time raising money for various charities such as the cancer charity Pelotonia. Are there other charities that you work with that you would like people to be aware of?
A: Yes! I just joined a charity called Bottletop, which was founded in London. They started off making these bags out of bottle caps with rural women making them. Then it grew and grew so much and now they have locations in Mozambique and they have a location in Brazil. I’m actually going in the beginning of August to see how they make the bags. All the proceeds go to their families and to educating women that don’t have children or a lot of money about medical issues.

Q: One thing that I love about the Victoria’s Secret model is that you are fit. It’s obvious that you all eat healthy and work out. There are many young girls who are aspiring to become models. What advice would you give them to prepare for a world where body image is so important?
A: You should never have to force it so much. A lot of the Victoria’s Secret girls and models in general, we grew up already thin. By the time we’ve reached 25, we’re naturally thin already. We have to work out to keep toned and eat healthy. I would recommend that if you already have problems, it’s difficult. For me, it’s about eating healthy, not thinking about it too much and find things that you like to do to stay in shape and not make it like you are slaving away.
