Located at the corner of Toulouse and Bourbon Streets, the French Opera House stood from 1859 until 1919, when it was destroyed by a devastating fire. Now, in celebration of what was the United States’ first opera house, the Four Points by Sheraton hosts its monthly Bon Operatit! on the grounds of this historical French Quarter location. On Wednesday, July 10, stop by to enjoy the free 7 p.m. performance of “Summertime” Gershwin Hits and Other American Standards.
Taking place in the hotel’s Puccini Bar, the performance will feature New Orleans’ very own Jesse Nolan, Lauren Mouney Gisclair and Mary Penick Akin. The trio of opera singers is acclaimed for not only their classically-trained voices, but also for “putting a twist on the party and entertainment scene.” Expect fresh takes on the playbill hits of Porgy and Bess, Oh Kay, and other American theater mainstays.
If you can’t make it to this month’s Bon Operatit!, be sure to mark your calendar for an evening of Mozart, Martinis and Music on Wednesday, August 14. During performances, valet parking is offered at a discounted rate of $5. Likewise, selections from the Puccini Bar’s cocktail and drink menus will be available for purchase.
For music lovers, an evening with Bon Operatit! should not be missed. Be sure to come out and enjoy this special and unique celebration of both American song and New Orleans’ Creole musical heritage.
