In case you didn’t know, Vera Wang celebrates her birthday this week, on June 27! This iconic wedding gown designer has so much to celebrate, as she has famously made brides beautiful for decades. To celebrate this designing diva’s day, I spoke with lifestyle expert and blogger Spencer Blohm about her influence on wedding fashion.

Q. What is it about Vera Wang that makes her so influential in the world of bridal fashion?

A. Vera Wang has become one of the faces of American fashion design because she began her business catering to her customers’ desire for fashionable wedding dresses designed with the same level of attention that had long been put into other areas of haute couture, but was largely lacking in bridal design before she came onto the scene. I think her whole design process is focused on giving her customers exactly what they want, and it’s clearly been paying off. She was one of the first big name bridal designers in a time when choices were rather limited for those without massive budgets and designing bridal wear was looked down upon. By creating such unique and sophisticated gowns, and attracting a famous clientele to act as her advertising, she was able to break the mold of what it meant to be a wedding gown designer. I think by doing this she paved the way for the huge bridal market we have now.

Q. What bridal fashion trends did she either create or make famous?

A. I don’t think that she necessarily caters to the newest and trendiest looks, but prefers more classic designs, or a variation on them. Recently however, we have been seeing more and more brides wearing colored dresses, including colors like black and red on their big day, and I believe that that’s a result of Vera putting colored bridal gowns on the runway during more recent collections.

Q. What about celebrity brides? How does Vera Wang cater to their needs?

A. Who hasn’t Vera Wang designed a wedding dress for? Jennifer Lopez (twice!), Heidi Klum, Jessica Simpson, Chelsea Clinton, Ivanka Trump, Hilary Duff, Uma Thurman, Kate Hudson, Lily Aldridge, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Brooklyn Decker, Kim Kardashian and the list goes on and on. What keeps celebrities like these coming back is probably her ability to make each and every one of them look unique and special while never detracting from the beauty of the bride – combining the best of the traditional wedding dress of the past with the cosmopolitan feel of fashion’s present.

Q. What are your thoughts on her latest collection?

A. The new look for Vera is a much more modern bride, one who isn’t afraid to walk down the aisle in a dress with a non-traditional silhouette. While she still creates the classic bridal gowns, she’s been showing her desire to again break the mold of what traditional bridal wear is, and experiment with various colors and textured fabrics. For her spring 2014 bridal collection, she showed a scaled back and minimal collection in many ways, featuring black accents on many of the gowns and black accessories on the runway.

Q. Some brides have smaller budgets than celebrities. Can Vera Wang’s style be truly captured in her less expensive line for David’s Bridal?

A. Brides on a budget looking for Vera Wang designed dresses can definitely find some affordable, modern looks in her WHITE by Vera Wang collection at David’s Bridal. WHITE features a number of different gowns in different silhouettes that strike the perfect balance of classic and modern, which is a lot what most brides are looking for in a Vera Wang design I think. Brides looking for the distinctive colored gowns and the newest shapes and textures Vera has shown recently, however, are still going to have to pay a pretty penny for a mainline Vera Wang gown.

Thank you so much for chatting with us about Vera Wang, Spencer! And happy birthday to Vera Wang!
