Deep in the heart of Candler Park sits Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Party.  Part bookstore, part coffee shop, part party venue, Dr. Bombay’s is a unique venue that should not be missed.

Upon entering the glass topped front door, your senses are assaulted.  Should you peruse the line of stuffed bookshelves to your left, each book available for a terribly reasonable price?  Perhaps you should look up where flags, paper cranes, bird cages, and a disco ball hang from the ceiling and blow in the air conditioning?  Or maybe you should walk straight ahead to the counter where various pastries, both savory and sweet, wait patiently under glass toppers.  Besides a regular coffee selection, customers can choose from over 30 teas to have hot or iced.  High tea is offered, with a variety of sandwiches, scones, and sweets are offered along with a pot of tea.  Additionally, ice cream is served, along with pies, scones, cupcakes, and other delicacies.  The selection changes daily.  If you like what you taste, whole cakes and cupcakes can be special ordered.  However, if you’re not in the mood for something sweet, both breakfast and lunch options are available – sandwiches, quiches, and smoothies. Vegan, Vegetarian, and Gluten-Free options are also available, upon special request.

Once you make your selection, it’s time to choose a seat.  There are café-style tables and chairs out front, or comfy chairs, booths, and tables inside.  Upon entering an adjacent room, you’ll find more bookshelves, along with long folding tables for larger groups.  Duck through the hallway in the back and you’ll emerge in a seemingly magical garden full of tables, chairs, and twinkle lights.

Dr. Bombay’s isn’t only coffee, tea, and sweets.  A percent of profits goes towards The Learning Tea, a project geared towards the education of young Indian women.  When Learning Tea founder Katrell Christie visited India in 2009, she was shocked at the complete lack of education and job opportunities for women.  She began to assist a small orphanage in West Bengal, and support soon grew to complete sponsoring of three girls through university level education.  In the four years since, The Learning Tea has sponsored 11 girls.  Sponsorship includes housing, tuition, food, clothing, medical benefits, music lessons, tutoring, computer classes, and other activities.  The needed donations come from the aforementioned book sales, website tea purchases, as well as a portion of Dr. Bombay’s proceeds.

So if you feel like helping out your fellow man while ordering your daily cuppa, Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Party is the place for you.  It’s guaranteed you’ll find nothing else like it in Atlanta.
