The City of Charleston and Friends of Keep Charleston Beautiful are set to host the 8th annual Green and Lean 5k Run/Walk.  The family-friendly event raises funds and awareness for two local non-profits – Keep Charleston Beautiful and The Friends of Keep Charleston Beautiful – that educate our youth about how to improve their community through environmental action.

Keep Charleston Beautiful promotes the beautification of the City of Charleston through education, public awareness, and community involvement.  The organization offers litter prevention and waste responsibility educational programs, as well as public awareness campaigns, free of charge to the community.  Friends of Keep Charleston Beautiful works to secure funding and support for Keep Charleston Beautiful.  The race proceeds of the Green and Lean 5k Run/Walk will directly benefit both of these non-profit organizations.

The 5k race starts and ends at Brittlebank Park, followed by Clara’s 50-yard Tot Trot for children ages 2-5 years old.  This year there will be a quarter mile run for children ages 6-10, which will run alongside the 5k course and have its own finish line.  Don’t want to run or walk?  Be a volunteer.  Volunteers will help with registration, monitoring the race route, distributing water, and helping time the runners as they cross the finish line.

Strollers and leashed dogs are welcome to participate in the event.  Awards are given for the first stroller and first dog to cross the finish line.  Cash awards are given to the top male and female winners.  Also, participants and volunteers will have the opportunity to bid on a variety of goods and services from local Charleston vendors before and after the race.
