On Thursday, May 16, 2013 Sing for Hope will be hosting the Sing for Hope Pianos launch party at the Sing for Hope Piano Studio. Sing for Hope is a non-profit organization founded by musicians Monica Yunus and Camille Zamora in 2006. The organization works to provides professional artists with opportunities to use their time and talent to give back to local communities. Sing for Hope features three programs offering artists the prospect to inspire, uplift and foster positive change for those in need. Art U! is an educational outreach program which artists visit public schools and classrooms and collaborating with students. The second program is Healing Arts. Healing Arts is a hospital outreach program which provides artists the opportunity to create performances and workshops for patients and their care-providers. The final program offering is Community Arts. Community Arts features benefit events and arts accessibility projects such as raising funds and awareness for charities, while making art reachable to everyone. Sing for Hope ultimate goal is to make art accessible to all, because they advocate that it is in the ability of art to heal, teach, and bring happiness to individuals who need it most.
This year 88 Pianos have been developed into works of art in a warehouse studio by local visual artists, and through supporters such as Arianna Huffington and fashion designer John Varvatos. Each artist designed their piano a unique mesmerizing way. From June 1 to June 16 all 88 pianos will be scattered around the five boroughs of New York City and made available for the public to play. In honor and in celebration of this fabulous opportunity to bring art and music to the city, this party will offer performances featuring 88 musicians playing each instrument. Also, TV and Broadway star Tituss Burgess, and Sylvanna Joyce + The Moment will be attending the launch party. Performances featuring the New York City Housing Authority Youth Chorus and Sing for Hope Youth Chorus will be a highlight of the evening as well.
During the summer of 2011 when this project was done with the pianos it was estimated that the pianos reached over 2 million people. Workers and volunteers come each day to open the pianos to the public. People of all ages are encouraged to try to interact with the instruments. Having these works of art or pianos available to play encourages musical growth, communication within the community, and development of the arts. From the South Bronx to Staten Island this year new pianos will be placed in new locations. Once the two weeks has come to an end, the final homes to these pianos are under resourced schools, hospitals, and community organizations – giving everyone the opportunity to have music and art apart of everyday life.
This year’s project is made possible through the support of Chobani, Inc., maker of America’s #1 selling yogurt brand. Sing for Hope also extends gratitude to ongoing support of our Founders’ Circle including the Arnhold Foundation in honor of Sissy Arnhold, the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation, and the Ann Ziff Foundation. Show your support the arts while supporting Sing for Hope. Join us May 16 for an evening of uplifting musical performances, astonishing works of art, hor d’oeuvres, and an open bar! All evening long enjoy the live music and open dance floor!
