Miss A Columnist

Melissa Curtin covers charity and style related events and loves to cover LA's best in beauty, fashion, and culture. She is an educator who recently returned to the classroom to motivate and inspire third graders at a private school in Pacific Palisades. In 2012, she launched an educational T-shirt line called Wear2learn. When she is not working out, hiking a canyon, or at the beach, she is writing. Her latest dream come true has been travel writing for Johnny Jet.

After teaching in the Maryland public school system for almost a decade, she left the conservative East Coast environment in Washington, DC for West Coast living. Eager for adventure, inner growth, and a new environment, she packed her car and took to the open road on her own landing in her new home - Hollywood, California. As a Connecticut Yankee at heart, she has now lived in Los Angeles for six years surrounded by the stars.

Melissa graduated from Gettysburg College with a double major in psychology and art history. Soon after, she earned a Master's Degree in education. Melissa traveled around the world on Semester at Sea, and earned a Fulbright Scholarship which enabled her to teach in England. A lust for travel and learning has fueled her globe trotting ever since. Some of her favorite destinations are Costa Rica, Thailand, Fiji, Morocco, Vietnam, Belgium, Italy, Sicily, Prague, Egypt, Australia, Greece, and Paris.

Los Angeles has won over her heart. She is constantly taking advantage of what LA LA Land has to offer - new boutiques and restaurants, finding great deals, discovering new hikes and beaches, music, and West Coast fashion.

Celebrity Moms On The Joys Of Motherhood

It’s almost Mother’s Day and, in celebration, we’re taking a look at some of our favorite high-profile mamas talk about the joys of motherhood.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have six children: Maddox, 12, Pax, 9, Zahara, 7, Shiloh, 6, and 4-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.

“There are far too many things to count,” Angelina said of the joys of motherhood. “But everything that matters in life has to do with being a parent.” She added: “I was such a punk for so long, you can’t imagine you’d be anybody’s role model. I’m very grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to do some things that have allowed me to be a role model. I hope I’m [a role model] for my children, and especially for my daughters.”

David Beckham and Victoria Beckham are parents to four kids: sons Brooklyn, 13, Romeo, 10, and Cruz, 8, and daughter Harper, 1. I had the pleasure of running into David at Fred Segal in Santa Monica while inspecting Aviator Nation hoodies and chatted briefly about the kids’ schools and soccer before he was accosted by camera girls.

“Well, you know when you get a TV you get a manual? Well, there isn’t one for motherhood,” Victoria said. “I’m constantly trying to figure it out and questioning whether I’m doing it right. But I’m so proud of my kids. They are very well-mannered… They laugh. They joke. They have fantastic personalities. I love hanging out with them.”

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck seem like one of the happiest couples in Hollywood with their three kids: daughters Violet, 7, and Seraphina, 4, and 1-year-old son Samuel. This power couple is a favorite of mine because they seem so grounded. I often see Jennifer in Pacific Palisades with her kids at the yogurt shop.

“It’s so important to me that they grow up with a healthy self-esteem, confidence and knowing just where to kick if they need to,” Jennifer said of raising her kids. “You want to set the best example you can for them in every way. You want them to grow up and be proud of you.”

Gwen Stefani:

Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani have been married for 10 years and are parents to sons Kingston, 7, and Zuma, 4. The longtime couple have spoken about their happy family life. Truly a rocker couple I admire. I used to see her at my old elementary school where her kids now go. She came into my class with Gavin when I was dressed as a Pilgrim for Thanksgiving, and one of my dear students had a chance to show her a board she created hanging in our classroom highlighting Gwen as her hero because she not only is stylish and has great music, but because she spends time with her kids.

“It’s superfun being a mom, but it’s not what you think it’s going to be,” Gwen admitted. “And it’s really gradual. At first, your life is totally the same. You have this cute little thing that you get to drive around everywhere and you’re so proud and it’s amazing. And as they grow older, it really does start to change your life.”
