Originally from South Carolina, Leslie Silver earned her Journalism degree at Indiana University (Go Hoosiers!) and moved to the Big Apple right after school. After six years in the city she was ready for a change of lifestyle and weather and made the move to Austin. Leslie works in hospitality public relations and loves to take her experience of trying top-notch clients around the world and using those experiences to critique spas and restaurants all over central Texas.

Leslie is a Huge dog lover, outdoorswoman, avid reader and has a healthy obsession with the show Parks and Recreation. Though living in Austin for less than a year, she’s already experience quite a lot and can’t wait to learn, explore and write about everything she discovers in the next year.

Interview With Daniel Nicholson, President Of NadaMoo! Coconut Milk Ice Cream

NadaMoo! is an organic, vegan, fair trade, dairy-free, zero cholesterol, gluten-free, lower calorie and low carb ice cream company that was established in Austin in 2004.  While some people get a little nervous about taste with so many good for you and good for environment ingredients, the ice cream was actually delicious!!  I really enjoyed the Lotta Mint Chip, my usual favorite flavor, and just loved it.  It could have used a tiny bit more chocolate chips, but it was really creamy and didn’t have any bland healthy taste at all.  My tasting crew I had helping me enjoy the flavors though were all in love with Mmm Maple Pecan.  The crowd consensus was that it tastes just like Bluebell Butter Pecan, had a perfect texture and was the perfect amount of creaminess.  NadaMoo! is sold locally at Central Market, Whole Foods and specialty & co-op grocery stores.  I talked to to president Daniel Nicholson to get more information on the back story of this great local company.

Q. How did Founder Amy Ramm come up with the idea for NadaMoo!?

A. Founded in 2004, Amy created NadaMoo! with equal parts inspiration and determination. Amy’s sister had always battled with seasonal allergies until a nutritionist recommended eliminating triggor foods to control them. Sympathetic to her sister’s bread, pastry and ice cream-less diet, Amy began re-inventing their favorite desserts while eliminating dairy, eggs, soy, wheat and sugar. It was through many hits and misses along the way that Amy, a good sister and a curious cook, found the healthy and delicious recipe for NadaMoo! coconut milk ice creams.

Q. Where in Texas are the products made?

A. Our products are made in Tyler, TX.

Q. How do you get ideas for new flavors?

A. We like to keep this process as creative as possible. It is a combination of looking at what is selling well across the industry along with having fun with flavors we know people are very familiar with but may have never thought about in ice cream form.

Q. Do you work with any philanthropies?

A. We are not currently working directly with any philanthropies, however, most of our event participation and product donations are aligned with philanthropic causes (e.g. celiac awareness, Health Awareness for Austin Musicians). I’d also like to say that social responsibility is at the core of our mission statement, and you will see NadaMoo! begin to make this more evident through its alignment with causes we want to get behind relative to health and wellness and education and the betterment of society in general.

Q. What are the plans for the future?

A. We are continuing to build our brand in the current territories we service and beyond.
