On Saturday, April 20, 2013 the Junior League of New Orleans held its annual Kitchen Tour, featuring twelve homes across the city’s Uptown and Garden District neighborhoods. Members of the organization were on hand to guide visitors and provide background on the distinctive design of each location. Under sunny, blue skies, it was the perfect day to travel by foot and streetcar, taking in the best of the city’s hospitality, while supporting an integral local charity.
Six of the featured homes were located along streets surrounding Uptown’s picturesque Audubon Park. As a neighborhood known for its cultivation of green space, many of the kitchens noted a striking balance between indoor and outdoor living, as airy rooms and easy patio access were prioritized. Popular decor shades included white, tan, pewter, and pale blue, all of which were elegantly reflected within flawless stone countertops and tile work. Featured sponsors for the Uptown homes included Cameron Kitchen and Bath Designs, Crane Builders, Stafford Tile and Stone, Cabinets by Design, Artisan Kitchen and Bath, Classic Cupboards, and The Hopkins Co.
Located within the historic Garden District, the other six kitchens, within some of the city’s oldest homes, represented a balance of modern amenity and classic construction. While adhering to a similar use of neutral shades, darker tones were noted, as well as a greater preponderance toward hardwood furniture and cookery-based detailing. Each of the homeowners demonstrated success in creating an effective play between architectural gravity and congenial livability. For the Garden District Homes, additional featured sponsors included Southport Custom Cabinetry, Lagarde’s Kitchen and Bath Design, and Villa Vici.
Congratulations to the JLNO for a successful Kitchen Tour 2013, as well as thanks to the gracious homeowners and event sponsors!
