Miss A Columnist

Hayley Orzech is the News & Opinion Editor for Miss A. She found her passion in writing. She grew up in Detroit, MI and though it has been through the mill, she still has faith in it. She just graduated from Northern Michigan University and believes that you have not seen snow until you’ve spent a winter in Marquette on the shores of Lake Superior. She is in love with traveling and her hope now is to see as many places as she can while pursuing her dreams. She grew up in a large Polish family, full of firefighters. If she has learned anything other than how to not set her house on fire, it is that you can never take your blessings for granted because they might be up in flames before you can blink.

She adores traveling and meeting new people from all walks of life. She reads and writes everyday in between navigating her early 20’s. She's made it her mission to spread the wealth to those who are less fortunate. We are all in this together, after all.
She has had the privilege of adventures like snowboarding down the Rocky Mountains, jumping off of a cliff into clear, beautiful Lake Superior, hearing music on the Detroit River, running down a sand dune into the Au Sable River, looking up at the Statue of Liberty, climbing up a waterfall in Jamaica, letting her fingertips graze over a shark in Key West, hiking in California, gazing at Mount Rushmore, holding onto a giant Redwood tree and so many others that she can hardly believe her luck. All she truly want out of life is to have more adventures while helping others and doing the thing she love to do most: write.

Tech For Good’s Circle Of Six App For Safety

We’ve all had that moment: that instant when you realize everything isn’t all right, that the guy being a little to friendly with you might be trouble, that your relationship might be doing more harm than good or that you just couldn’t drive safely even though you said you could. Then comes the escape plan, half formed, and probably not very helpful. Luckily for us, there is now an app for safety that no woman should be without. Circle of 6, an app created for the iPhone and the Android, is the fully formed escape route for when you need a way out of an undesirable situation.

Created in 2011 by  Tech for Good, Inc,  a non-profit dedicated to using moblie technology to help end violence in populations where violence reigns, it was the winner of the White House/HHS Apps Against Abuse Technology Challenge as well as the winner of the Institue of Medicine/Avon Foundation for Women End Violence @Home Challenge, the free app has been praised by some of our favorites such as Cosmopolitan, Self and Marie Claire.

So what does Circle of 6 do, you ask? The app is designed to send six different people a text message when you feel that you need help, be it a ride home, an interruption or an intervention and there is also a direct line to a Rape or Sexual Assault Hotline or a Relationship Abuse Hotline. Sound complicated? It isn’t, in fact it is one of the easiest apps to use since it does most of the work for you. Once you have the free app downloaded, the step by step instructions walk you through every aspect of the app. The only thing you need to do is to to select your circle.

Who should be in your circle? People you trust! Your friends and family that you could rely on to come and pick you up if you need a ride, call you to give you a reason to walk away from the creep hitting on you at the bar or help you if you need to get out of a relationship you feel is going down the wrong road. After you choose your 6, the app will give you options about which text message you would like to send to your circle. All you have to do after that is select the message you want and the app will instantly send the message to your circle.
