Five Austin Fundraisers To Help Victims In West

Between the horrific bombing at the Boston Marathon and the explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, it has been a hard week across the country. But tough times bring out the best in some and everyone can help those around them by volunteering and giving back. Look below for five ways to aid victims of the West incident right here in Austin.

Countless Texas citizens have stepped up to the plate to donate one of life’s necessities for those who have been injured in West. The Blood Center of Central Texas posted last week on their facebook page that they are looking for donors this week and next. They are asking those who are eligible and willing to donate to sign up for an appointment before coming in. Those who want to set one for this week can do so here.

Willie Nelson will be holding a concert this weekend that was originally intended as a celebration of his 80th birthday. However,

after the devastating explosion, just miles away from where he grew up, he is transforming the event into a benefit concert. Proceeds will go to the West Volunteer Fire Department. Join him along with Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Paula Nelson Band and Folk Uke to support a town close to his heart.

Man Up Texas BBQ tweeted about setting up a barbecue benefit and la Barbecue immediately asked to be a part of it. West is saying they do not need item donations at this time and so this imagesfundraiser will be taking monetary donations only. The event will include free chopped beef sandwiches, live music and drinks.

Austin Bakes has had two successful fundraisers in the past with Austin Bakes for Bastrop

and Austin Bakes for Japan. This time they are inviting everyone to help the victims of West on May 4. The bake sale will be giving the proceeds to AmeriCares who is working to help West. Those who cannot attend can also donate to AmeriCares online instead.

For the Longhorns among us, the Student Government, University Co-op and UT Senate of College Councils have created a West

themed tee to benefit the victims. All proceeds from the sales will go to help the families in need out there. The shirts, which say “Texas Stands With West,” are on sale here.
