Upcoming Events At The Central Branch Of The Enoch Pratt Library

The Enoch Pratt Library has wonderful programming throughout the year that caters to all age groups.  From fairytale reading events for kids to happy hours for young adults to guest lectures by a variety of authors and political figures, the Enoch Pratt library has something for everyone!  While strolling in my neighborhood, it’s always fun to see the changing window displays signaling upcoming events at the Central Branch.  Here are my top picks:

1. Learning, Listening, Leading: Celebrating BUILD’s Thirty-Five years of orgnanizing in Baltimore City

Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development (BUILD) has organized for change on front stoops and in living rooms, in churches and classrooms, in City Hall and at the State House in Annapolis for the past thirty-five years.  Join members of BUILD in the Main Hall as they celebrate the past and embrace the challenges of the future.  Historian and author Taylor Branch will be the featured speaker.

2. A special fiftieth anniversary screening of The Birds
Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 suspense classic, The Birds in Wheeler auditorium. The movie was one of Hitchcock’s only films without a traditional film score, as the director relied on electronic sound effects alternating with silence to build tension.  This was also one of his first films to utilize special effects.  If you’ve never seen this classic, check out the trailer here.

3. Mother Goose Baby Steps
This is an interactive nursery rhyme program for children up to thirty-six months and their caregivers which includes lots of music and movement.  The little ones are sure to enjoy!

4. Salon Concert
Solomon Eichner, a Baltimore native and graduate of the prestigious Peabody institute, will perform a program of music by Beethoven, Liszt and Prokofiev on the piano in Wheeler Auditorium.

5. Five Guys Wind Quintet
The Five Guys Wind Quintet from the Peabody Institute will perform a concert of select pieces for wind instruments including Op. 43 by Carl Nielson and Samuel Barber’s “Summer Music” in the Fine Arts & Music Reading Room.

6. Things Your Mother Never Told You About Food

 Chef Connie Crabtree-Burritt will give a cooking demonstation and tasting in the Poe Room.  She’s a teacher in the Culinary Arts Job Training program at Baltimore Outreach Services (BOS), a nonprofit that provides programs and services to homeless women and children.  BOS published a cookbook, BOS Cooks, To celebrate its tenth anniversary, which will be on sale following the program.
