Miss A Columnist

Melissa Curtin covers charity and style related events and loves to cover LA's best in beauty, fashion, and culture. She is an educator who recently returned to the classroom to motivate and inspire third graders at a private school in Pacific Palisades. In 2012, she launched an educational T-shirt line called Wear2learn. When she is not working out, hiking a canyon, or at the beach, she is writing. Her latest dream come true has been travel writing for Johnny Jet.

After teaching in the Maryland public school system for almost a decade, she left the conservative East Coast environment in Washington, DC for West Coast living. Eager for adventure, inner growth, and a new environment, she packed her car and took to the open road on her own landing in her new home - Hollywood, California. As a Connecticut Yankee at heart, she has now lived in Los Angeles for six years surrounded by the stars.

Melissa graduated from Gettysburg College with a double major in psychology and art history. Soon after, she earned a Master's Degree in education. Melissa traveled around the world on Semester at Sea, and earned a Fulbright Scholarship which enabled her to teach in England. A lust for travel and learning has fueled her globe trotting ever since. Some of her favorite destinations are Costa Rica, Thailand, Fiji, Morocco, Vietnam, Belgium, Italy, Sicily, Prague, Egypt, Australia, Greece, and Paris.

Los Angeles has won over her heart. She is constantly taking advantage of what LA LA Land has to offer - new boutiques and restaurants, finding great deals, discovering new hikes and beaches, music, and West Coast fashion.

Baby Shower Gifts For Daddy To Be

Founder of DaddyScrubs, Robert Nickell

Wondering what to get that expectant dad? Who says daddies shouldn’t get baby gifts, too? I have discovered the best Daddy gifts right here in Hollywood – Daddy Scrubs and more! Their gifts are the best way to honor a proud papa.

DaddyScrubs, created by Robert Nickell (father of seven), offers “Daddy” pride through a variety of cool, functional, and masculine gifts. Now, expectant fathers can leave their street clothes outside of the delivery room doors in favor of the comfort of DaddyScrubs.  Proud papas and papas-to-be have been celebrating in and out of delivery rooms across the country with their DaddyScrubs hats, tees, hoodies, mugs, and DaddySwag Gift Sets. No longer does the mama-to-be have to be the one to get all the goodies!

Tom Arnold joins the growing list of celeb dads who have embraced the DaddyScrubs collection, including Mark Deklin, Ian Ziering, Ty Murray, Donald Trump Jr., Cash Warren, Dean McDermott, Kevin James, Antonio Sabato Jr., and many more.

Some of my other favorite “Daddy”-does-good gifts are their black padded Daddy Diaper Pack that says discreetly on it in a hip way “I’m the Daddy” which can hold all your new little one’s necessities. A dad can have this stocked and ready whenever he needs to take the little one out without mama’s help. You know how guys forget things! The side pockets are great for water bottles, baby bottles, sippy cups and other quick-grab essentials.  There is also a large, centrally located compartment that is perfect for diapers and a change of clothes (and of course a small one for the “dirty stuff,” too!). The front pocket is designed to hold all of your essentials, the items you don’t have time to dig around for like keys, money, a pacifier, small toys, and a snack. Plus, you can attach almost anything to the straps across the front of the pack, from sand pails, to beach towels, to flip flops, to hats, and wet clothes.

My other favorite new Daddy gift finds are the BubbleBum and Snoozeshade travel gear. These are a must!

The multi-award winning BubbleBum is an innovative, inflatable booster seat for kids aged four to eleven.  It checks in at less than one pound and inflates in minutes. When not in use, simply deflate the booster seat, roll it up, and stow it away in the trunk or backpack for the next use. BubbleBum is perfect for fly ins with care rentals, cabs, or school trips.  It’s the perfect travel companion, there’s no need to carry a bulky booster seat again with this lightweight, compact solution.  BubbleBum ($39.99) is sold online at BubbleBum .  It is also available in select Target stores and Babiesrus.com nationally.

They even have a BubbleBum Travel App for Both Android & iPhone!  The BubbleBum travel app offers a range of fun games to play on-the-go and to keep the kids entertained whether you’re in the car or waiting for a flight. There’s also a handy travel checklist feature to make sure you’ve packed everything you need for your journey.  Too bad it can’t pack for you as well! The BubbleBum app features four great games: Tic-Tac-Toe (Single player & Two player modes), Car Bingo, Traffic Jam (with thirty increasingly difficult levels), and Treasure Hunt (with four different location modes).

SnoozeShade is an award-winning sleep solution that provides babies and young children with a dark, restful environment when away from home or during brightly lit getaways to warm weather destinations. SnoozeShade sun and sleep shade for strollers, car seats and play yards allows baby to get the rest she needs while blocking out harmful sun rays and inclement weather. Designed by a British mom, Cara Sayer, who was in search of a better solution than blanket-draping, SnoozeShade blocks out up to ninety-eight percent of light, and also shields baby from weather such as rain, wind and sun.  It also has sunburn-preventing UPF40+ blocking nearly ninety-eight percent of harmful UV rays.  SnoozeShade is lightweight, easy-to-use, and has no complicated attachments and fits most popular brands. It’s ideal for vacations, or for when sharing rooms away from home.  Moms and dads can take their little ones everywhere and know they will be able to sleep under the SnoozeShade, which keeps them happy, healthy and well-rested.
