“He’s rounding third and heading to home base,” is a great thing to hear the announcer say when you are watching a Seattle Mariners home game at Safeco Field. The concept of “heading home,” however, is not possible for many youths in King County. On any one night, the United Way estimates that there are as many as one thousand young people homeless and out on the streets in King County.
As part of its mission, the United Way of King County is working with other organizations in our community to create services, housing, education and systems to keep youth from becoming homeless (or help them quickly recover if they do).
Now, the United Way of King County has teamed up with the Seattle Mariners and many local “all stars” in a friendly ball game to benefit Seattle’s homeless youth.
Mariners legends Dan Wilson and Jay Buhner are the opposing captains, with the great Edgar Martinez as one of the head coaches. Other local celebrities include Seattle SuperSonics Gary Payton, Slick Watts and Detlef Schrempf, Seattle Sounder Steve Zakuani, author Sherman Alexie, restaurateur Ethan Stowell and Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament. The full roster is listed here.
Thanks to a generous matching donation of $250,000 from the Raikes Foundation, the goal of the All-Star Classic is to raise $500,000.
A $10 general admission ticket gets you in to see all the action. A $125 VIP ticket gets you into pre-event festivities, such as Diamond Club access and reserved seating. Plus, you’ll get field access during pre-game batting practice. The All Star Softball Classic for Homeless Youth promises to be a fantastic event for the whole family, group of friends, and even a great gift idea for Father’s Day.
